THE NEW DYNAMIX #1 REVIEW!

Review by Rodney Sweigart

As a diehard DC fanboy, I am always hesitant to try an Independent book. But Wildstorm is technically DC title, so I thought “why not”. For all we know, it could be one of their 52 earths.

Right off the bat, I love the art. It’s clean and very vivid, not dark and overshadowed (like Marvel). It’s a little on the anime/manga side, but not overly so. The art is by J J Kirby who actually once worked for Marvel (remember the old Mutant X series?).

The first issue of this series introduces four characters who have an entwined history. Apparently, the super beings of this planet have either faded into the normal populace or died. Costumed heroics are few and far between, but do still occur. The two prominent heroes are Love Rocket (a shock jock by trade) and Sword (a vain and almost insane pretty boy). Resident powerhouse Black Opal aka Omni has retired with Greymalkin (a were-creature of some sort).

A great catastrophe is looming. No one can say what it is, but you can feel it is coming soon. Whatever “it” may be, it may be tied the the disappearance of the super beings. And a hostage situation, brings Love Rocket and Sword into action. The hostage taker wants Omni who is busy making Ramen noodles for himself and Greymalkin.

As a newbie, this issue does an incredible job of introducing characters. It is paced very well and includes a mini-bio page that helps. I know these are not new characters to most, but they are new to me and I got a very good first impression. It is refreshing to read a book/series that does not have Superman or Batman cameo in its first arc. To me, it’s a clean slate and new universe. The characters are interesting and not stereotypical.

The good thing is that the story is unfolding with a few questions. Where are the super beings? What event is on the horizon? How will the team dynamics play out?

The bad thing about New Dynamix is that the DC solicitations have it down for only five issues. I plan on getting the remaining four. I tried reading the Authority and didn’t like it. This title has promise and potential.

If you are looking for a new team-in-the-making book, definitely get the first issue. If you have read these characters before, come back and give it a try. I would love to know your insights.
