Booster Gold #4 review

“The greatest hero you’ve never heard of!” That’s what the cover to this month’s Booster Gold #4 raves. And you know what? That may just be true. In previous issues, he’s saved the lives of both the Green Lantern and Superman, without either hero knowing he existed. How? Time-travel of course! Booster’s been traveling through time with his buddy Rip Hunter, trying to save super-heroes from being erased from time before they are created. And what a ride it’s been.

This issue, Booster Gold tries to save the existence of the Flash and comes face to face with the people who have been screwing up time from the start. We’ve wondered who the attackers were since issue 1, and now we finally find out in this issue. In regard to who the villains are, all I will say is Hoo-doggy! I am pleasantly surprised by this revelation. That’s all you’ll get out of me. I prefer to keep my reviews as spoiler-free as possible.

Written by Geoff Johns and Jeff Katz, Booster Gold has always been an enjoyable title, due largely in part to the colorful cast. Not just Booster, the loveable loser he is, but also Mr. Gold’s security droid from the 25th century called Skeets, who does nothing but crack as much wise as a flying robot the size of a laptop can. Also, the Flash and Kid Flash guest star this issue, bringing their respective wit and charm into the mix.

Also deserving praise is the art by Dan Jurgens. Jurgens created Booster Gold in the first place, and you can tell he cares about this character in the way Booster is lovingly drawn. Not that everything else is ugly, mind you. The heroes all look valiant and heroic, and you can tell Supernova, one of the nefarious villains of the issue, is a bad guy even if he’s wearing a head-to-toe costume. When ‘Nova’s mask comes off though…get ready to cringe. Whoopsie-daisy! Looks like something slipped out! Guess I couldn’t help but tease you with some more tantalizing half-spoilers. Oh well.

The general idea behind this new Booster Gold series (traveling through time to protect the fabric of the universe) is a frankly brilliant way to avoid getting bogged down in the mega-event laden continuity of the current comic industry. The creative teams can pretty much tell whatever story they want without worrying about any countdown or secret invasion bogging down their creative flow of ideas. And if future solicits (concerning the Joker crippling Batgirl and Blue Beetle’s death) are any indication, we are in for one wild and hairy ride. So sit back, relax, and enjoy.

9 Supernova’s out of 10.
