I am delighted to share with you a production of stunning ambition and scope, which combines the talents of an unrivalled team to bring to graphic form the iconic genius of Sergei Eisenstein’s classic Russian film, Alexander Nevsky.
Mosfilm—in cooperation with Trident Media Group—has, for the first time ever, agreed to allow a retelling of a Sergei Eisentein film in another medium. No sequel or prequel has ever been allowed by Mosfilm before now. Film director Sergei Eisenstein’s film ALEXANDER NEVSKY was one of the 20th Century’s most important films. Not only was it a landmark in the history of film, the movie also celebrates a watershed moment in Russian history: the Russian people’s struggle for freedom from oppression. His revered and much studied film has inspired many great filmmakers and their motion pictures, including 300, Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven.
NEVSKY, the graphic novel adaptation of the iconic film will deliver the story in a vibrant new format for a new generation of readers and film-goers to enjoy. Alexander Nevsky is a heroic leader and passionate warrior; he is proud and honored to fight for his home nation of Russia. When the Teutonic Knights of the Holy Roman Empire attack his beloved home, he assembles the Novgorod people (the Russian people) for battle, faces the invading forces and saves his people from tyranny and oppression. Against the odds—and often against the nobility of Russia, who wanted to appease the invaders—Alexander Nevsky and his people’s army defeat the Teutonic Knights in a famous battle on the ice. Like the stories of 300, Gladiator, and Kingdom of Heaven, director Sergei Eisenstein’s film captures the epic struggle between good and evil and a people seeking their freedom from those that would wish them great harm on a grand scale.
The story is brought to life by the acclaimed writer Ben McCool, whose work on Justice League Unlimited and the creation of Choker has provided him wide industry attention. Paired with the vivid artwork of comic illustrator Mario Guevarra and well-known publishers IDW, NEVSKY is a book that will retell the story of one history’s greatest heroes.
