Apart from Tron, I am looking forward to this more than anything else coming out for the rest of the year.

For me, although perhaps in the minority, I just have to ask ... Why?

Why is this being remade? There is absolutely NOTHING ... okay .... very little, wrong with the original. True, Wayne was not the best of actors, but this is one of his movies that he didn't have to be. What, are they adding more special effects treatment? haha.

Just don't get this at all. Why not another comic movie instead? Need a western? Something like, oh I don't know ... THE SIXTH GUN !!!!!

That was my original feeling as well but the more I read about it the more interested I got.  Apparently this one stays truer to the original novel which was bloodier.  And we all know the Coen brothers can do bloody.

If people were to never make remakes, we would not have:
The Thing (1982)
Dracula (1931)
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
The Magnificent Seven (1960)
The Fly (1986)
Casino Royale (2006)
Scarface (1983)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

However, we are saddled with:
Halloween (2008)
Psycho (1998)
Godzilla (1998)
Planet of the Apes (2001)
...and a myriad other horrible films.

It's a double edged sword.  I mean, do we really NEED remakes?  No, but they are here to stay.  They've been around as long as film itself, ever since one filmmaker thought they could do better than another, or wanted to pay homage to their favorite flick.

Will True Grit work?  Who knows, but considering the source, I'll give it a shot.

Hell, I'll probably like it

I am not against remakes ... I think, as you showed, they can really work well, but TRUE GRIT remake seems just about pointless as I see not the demand for anything like that. Of course, I guess that is the time to strike.

But hey ...movies with the same name but different premise shouldn't count as a remake (Casino Royale  Cheesy)

Just saw the trailer for this movie.

A) Looks really F'n fun.  Smiley

B) Looks nothing like TRUE GRIT.  Tongue

Did they just borrow the name? Again, Why remake this? Just call it ... "ROOSTER" or something. Of course, I hear this is suppose to be truer to the novel, so that is a plus and if that holds true then my bitching is meaningless.

While I love True Grit (love da Duke), I'm also a huge Cohen brothers fan. So, I'm in.

I just got back from the theater. No spoilers below but some thoughts.

I really liked it.  It puts back in some things that were in the book that the Duke's movie changed (including the ending - minor change).

It's not really much bloodier than the original movie but thats ok.  The places that were bloody caught me by surprise.

Bridges does a good Rooster once I got used to his speech.  Did not even recognize Matt Damon for the first 20 minutes he was in the movie.  Great job on his part.

Josh Brolin was just 'eh.  Not sure why he got top billing.

Thought it was funny that Lucky Ned Pepper was played by Barry Pepper.  He did a good job but was he a shoe in because of his last name?

I'd reccomend it.

Tomorrow we're going to go see Tron to complete our Jeff Bridges movie week.  ;-)

Caught it yesterday with a surprisingly big crowd.

A solid Western and if that's what you're looking for that's what you're going to get.

If you go in expecting the next Cohen Bros. classic, like a No Country For Old Men, you're asking for too much.

Forget the Cohen Bros. are writing and directing.  Just expect a good western with great dialog and you'll be fine.

Hailee Steinfeld does an amazing job as does Jeff Bridges, Dakin Matthews, and Barry Pepper.  I like the approach Josh Brolin took, playing more crazy than tough in a cast were everyone is playing tough.  And Matt Damon - like in most if not all Damon roles - was serviceable.

Spoilers below, if you haven't seen it yet......

The best, most obvious moment where you could tell, if you didn't know it going in, that this movie was directed by the Coens, was when the medicine man in the bearskin shows up.  That scene was just awesome.  Classic Coen bros.

The whole movie was amazing, IMO.  The girl had me rolling when she went into the horse traders office and talked him into giving her $300 for basically nothing.  Damon did a great job I thought, especially after he bit half his tongue off.

Definitely my favorite western since Unforgiven, and maybe over time, it will surpass even that great film.  Really good stuff.

Loved it!

Great film, great characters, and the line, "Wait! Are we trading again?!" had me roaring.

I loved the speech and vernacular of the film; it's something I just could never write but I love to hear and enjoy. Very pleased with this rendition and am all the more thankful it was done well. As I am a big fan of da' Duke's movies, I'm happy this turned out so well.

But Ed...better than Unforgiven? Sacriligie! Tongue

Whoa whoa whoa.  I never said it was better than Unforgiven... I just said I enjoyed it more than any western since.  Who knows how I will feel about it in the future.  Cool
