Title: Goodbye CrossGen ... Again
Post by: Perry on March 30, 2019, 04:38:23 PM
Man, and now it really ends ...
 :'(
The person responsible for both jamming creators for going too big too soon as well as being what could be the only reason I am back reading comics again ... Mark Alessi has DIED (https://www.bleedingcool.com/2019/03/30/mark-alessi-crossgen-died/)

Got time to come back to this.

I feel Alessi got a bad rap, and not nearly enough credit for the comics landscapes today.

HE was the reason we have digital comics streaming service. I truly believe without him, Marvel would still have continued to drag it's feet for Unlimited. Without knowing the success of COW (Comics On the Web, for those that didn't buy it), I believe the companies would have maintained the mantra 'no one wants to read comics online' for a lot longer.

HE sheparded in AMAZING coloring. Serious, all those first books were damned gorgeous. Paintings all of them. I believe those books  predated 'The Ultimates' when...I think Laura DuPoy really received amazing credit for being a colorist. Not that the books back then were still the 4 color wonders of the 60s, but man, Crossgen REALLY make a comic amazing to look at.

HE really enforced the dedication to the fan to make all his books on time and monthly...(until they weren't..but that was a different business practice failure). HE was the one to collect all books into trades right away after 6 months were finished. Marvel was only doing this for DD at this point, but after CG's demise, Marvel really fell lock step and barrel into this practice.

HE was a pioneer that is simply not recognzied for what the did to the industry, because it's clouded for what he was like to people.

I just keep thinking about what would have happened to CrossGen had his wife not died. That is when everything started to fall apart. His love was now gone and while it didn't killed the passion he had for his company, his mind just couldn't get back in the game. He tried to hang in there but from all accounts that I have read, his heart was crushed by his loss and he just couldn't recover. CG just started going downhill from there.

That I think they tried to go a little too big, too fast.

OH that's RIGHT, I forgot all about it until you brought it up!

I think Mark Waid, as much as he flipped on the man and became against Crossgen, even noted at the time how much Alessi had changed.
