Wall*E Blu Ray

By Rich Davenport

Wall*E is not the best offering from Pixar.  In fact, it is likely one of my least favorite of the esteemed animation giant's portfolio.  That being said, Pixar's worst effort is still better than almost anything else that any other studio pumps out mindlessly each year.

Wall*E is the story of a little worker drone robot named, appropriately, Wall*E.  He has been tasked to clean up an Earth ravaged and abandoned by a humanity that long ago privatized politics and turned the world over to Big Business, given face here by Fred Willard in a fantastic cameo as the CEO of BnL, which makes everything you could ever need.  Including Wall*E and the ship that carried the human race to the stars.

Wall*E works every day to clean up the mess left behind, accompanied by his little cockroach friend.  Wall*E is perfectly content in his life, collecting remnants of a bygone age and watching Hello Dolly.

Then, one day, the humans send a probe droid, EVE, to determine if Earth is capable of sustaining life again.  Wall*E falls in love with EVE.  She finds a plant, evidence of life sustaining proteins in the soil again after all these years, and calls her ship back.  Wall*E hitches a ride on the outside of the ship, and that is where the adventure really begins.

On Blu-Ray disc, Wall*E delivers the goods.  The picture quality is free of any video artifacts, which is to be expected, given it is a high definition transfer from a high definition source that was created digitally.  The audio rivals the picture, and the supplements are justly robust.

Included are two short films, one of which was created for this home video release.  You will kick yourself if you watch Burn*E before you watch the feature film, and you will likewise be missing out if you do not watch it after the main film is over.  Burn*E's plight is a delight to watch, and how many of us haven't tried to fix something, but something else entirely is ALWAYS getting in the way?

If you are a Pixar fan who has not seen Wall*E, do yourself a favor and buy or rent this movie today.  It's not as good as Toy Story, but at the same time it is better than A Bug's Life.
