I just got back from Man of Steel with my dad for Father's day. It was stunning, action-packed, had ton of amazing special effects, and a helluva of story. It was simply astonishing.

You HAVE to go see this movie. I think Henry Cavill just became this generation's Superman. I daresay it was even better than Avengers.

The one and only complaint I had about it is: What was with the shaky camera? For high-energy action scenes, it makes sense, but it was shaky even in scenes that was nothing more than talking heads. Could we not afford a tripod?

I just got back from seeing it.  I am on the fence about this one also.

I thought it was a very good, maybe even great, movie...i'm just not so sure it was a very good Superman movie.

#1) I hate that they did away with the lois/clark/superman love triangle.  that's what I always thought was a major part of the heart of superman.  the fact that he loves lois as both clark and superman, but she only has eyes for supes and he loves her enough that he doesn't want to endanger her by revealing his secret to her.

#2) he kills zod?  really?  I know this is a superman who is newly discovering his powers and heritage and what makes them all tick and how to control them, but really?  he has zod in a half nelson and he can't stop zod from turning his head to keep his heat vision away from the civilians?  in the time it takes him to jump up and snap his neck, he could have jumped up and thrown him through a wall.  I guess I may have been a little ok with his use of lethal force, if the situation deemed it necessary, but this just didn't seem like that situation.  and yes, I know that he probably realized that zod was going to continue his rampage and maim/kill hundreds of others if e wasn't stopped.

#3) I wish we had seen a little more of supes saving some of the citizens in metropolis while buildings are collapsing and explosions are going off willy nilly, etc.  he saved lois from falling from the plane and he saved the solider who fell out of the copter, but I don't recall any other last second saves.

#4) I know the glasses disguise is kinda corny and hard to believe, buuuuut....at least Richard donner and chris reeve changed the mannerisms, the hair style and the overall behavior between clark and kal-el, but henry cavill at the end in the glasses was just that.  henry cavill in glasses.  heck, he didn't even put them on until he was in the elevator surrounded by all kinds of people after riding a bicycle through downtown metropolis.

all of this being said, I really liked it.  great action, I loved crowe as jor-el, I liked the flashback scenes of clarks childhood, I liked how pa kent died and the guilt it put on clark.  I wish they had put a scene at the end or an easter egg (other than the lexcorp trucks) in somewhere.

#2 actually did happen in the comics. It helped define his character in the Post-Crisis years.

Finally saw this and I have to say it was a really good, fun and enjoyable "alien comes to Earth" movie, but just an okay Superman movie.

Some slight spoilers maybe below, so just in case ...

Good acting, great action scenes with good to great special effects and a decent plot line help forge this into an enjoyable watch. And hell, there were only two noticeable dialog problems that drew me out of the movie (The US Coast Guard reply of "Forget them. They're dead" to the fishing trawlers for one and the other ... damn it, I forget now  Cheesy) makes this a movie worthy of the time.

The total misuse of Pa Kent and the bullshit way Clark let him die, the pussification and total destruction of Clark's younger years (the seeming total disregard of him having any fun while in his youth) and of course the "big problem" every older comic fan harbors towards this movie, makes it a less than great Superman flick.

Really loved the look and feel of Krypton. Very well done in all aspects ... except for the Negative Zone. Not a major bitch, but that part just felt a little ... less than the spectacle it should have been.

All the acting, like I said, was good and enjoyed seeing ole Toby from WEST WING in the movie.

Yep, overall, a very good movie. However, regardless of the reasons why, it lacked the "awe and heart" of a movie starring the last son of Krypton. It just didn't feel like a Superman movie. And I say that as an avid ... non-fan ... of Superman. What I hate about Superman is not in this movie. You would think that would make me like it more, but it really just makes me ... not like it less ... but feel like I didn't watch a Superman movie. Hard to describe.

Yes, I am one that believes Superman doesn't kill, regardless of a writer being allowed by an editor to do so in the past (Dr. Doom also cried for New York City after 911, that doesn't mean it SHOULD be cannon) so that aspect kinda took away the Superman feel, but even if that one instance was not in the movie, that somehow Supes was able to find a way to send Zod back to the Zone or through the wormhole ... or whatever ... even if the Zod thing didn't happen, this was not a movie that felt like a Superman movie.

The lack of joy when he was young, the coward like display in the bar (and when he was young) and the over all lack of any love or pride, made this too close to a villains origin movie than a Superman one.

As a movie - 8 outta 10 Awsome Kelors !!!!!
As a Superman movie - 5 outta 10 Lexcorp gas trailers

The Superman killing Zod moment was a lot more than just something a writer wrote in and the editor let them get away with. And it was a lot more than the Doom crying moment that nobody else remembers.

Superman killing Zod was a huge moment in Superman's Post-Crisis history. It kicked off one of the coolest storyarcs ever in Superman books, Exile. It was referred to and used for many years after the fact and emotionally scarred Superman's psyche. And it was the sole reason Superman decided to never kill again.

EDIT:
I guess the difference is Pre-Crisis fans and Post-Crisis fans. As a Post-Crisis fan, I saw it coming a mile away. But I can see the Pre-Crisis fans calling blasphemy.

Of course Superman killing was used after the fact in the comics, but it was solely an editor who made the call to allow it. Plus, Superman books were not burning the way into peoples hands at the time and it was a way to bring "life" into the character (pun intended). Doesn't change the fact that it should not have been done. Pa Kent was also different during that time, another of the changes that made some fans happy while most cringe.

Captain America also went gun happy after 9-11 and that was the "standard" for awhile. Also should not have happened and luckily, that was resolved rather quickly, but that is just an example of how one or two people can set a ball in motion that should not be in motion and change the very make up of a character. (Yes I see the irony using Cap, a WWII vet who loved using guns during war, as an example of "bad changes", but you get my point)
 Cheesy

Hell, Peter lost his wife to the whims and desire of an editor, doesn't change that it shouldn't have been done. Regardless of what the DC boys are now saying, doing the same with their characters.
 Roll Eyes

Again, That one point didn't spoil the movie for me, the entire atmosphere of the movie was "non-Superman", I still hold that the movie as just "a movie" was very well done and I enjoyed it, but I most certainly understand the hatred or mild irritation of others that cried out "Superman does not kill!" because, well, he doesn't ... or didn't until someone wanted him to.
 Wink

But like you said, it is mainly an age thing, I believe. People coming on to Spiderman now will never miss the internal happiness that a married Peter Parker was able to show in the comics. Actually, I guess if they come on "now", they won't see a Peter Parker at all

Perry, I think you and I are moved to the same points with the movie.

The most I hated about the movie was the pure outrageous disaster porn of the last 45 minutes. I've turned my fiancé from a 7th grade language arts/YA adult teacher & reader into a huge fan of the comic movie/shows/themes (she won't read them). She LOVED Iron Mans and Avengers.

This movie? She tuned out once Kryptonians came to Metropolis.

As for Pa Kent; if that man was a true Midwestern farmer; then that damned dog would have been left for dead. ALSO; there is no way that native Kansasians (sp?) would be out driving that much on a day suspected for having some tornado like storms occurring. As a Midwestern raised farmer's boy; I cried foul at hamfisted situational writing there.  Wink

But as for the killing of the 3 criminals in Superman 22 by Byrne; Superman sales were quite fine and solid by that time, and even more so going into Exile, so I wouldn't label that as a sales bump/push by editorial. Superman's death? Sure thing. Superman killing? Just as Nate said, they wanted something to resonate so clearly with the character that he would never, ever, do it again (until he had to Wink )

I liked the movie....but I still needed something more. This movie didn't give me a chance to show everyone why Superman is my utter favorite, and why he should be yours too.

This statement, above all others, made by all others, exemplifies the reason why this was not a good Superman movie.

(That and Pa Kent being shown so horribly)

Thanks to CA ... this movie, the way Jimmy and I would have loved it (well, except this still has that ending and all the destruction and lives lost and ... crap ... forget all that)

Right? Doesn't the colors at least make that world look beautiful? Just seeing that redress just makes me hate the thought of Snyder's influence all over BvS.
