I recall this book being the hottest ticket in town when it was released. While Morrison was not as much of an iconic figure as he is today, true comic book fans were aware of his ground breaking work on Animal Man. As for McKean, his covers on Sandman had led him to be a favorite amongst comic book connoisseurs.

However, at the time, Arkham Asylum failed to live to the hype. I remember how fans and fellow collectors were enraged at spending a lot of money for a graphic novel that contained fantastic painted art but had no idea where Morrison's script was going. Although I still own the hardcover copy I bought back in 1989, I never re-read the book. I suppose that a lot of the concepts and ideas were lost on a reader who was looking for the next Year One, Killing Joke and Ten Nights Of The Beast.

Your review has certainly inspired me to dust off my copy and give it another read. Perhaps this time around, I'll be able to fully appreciate Morrison's intentions.  Hell, I think I'll hunt down the 15th anniversary Edition Hc that contains extras.
