Title: Weekly Reader, December 19, 2018 (Almost Christmas Week!!!)
Post by: Perry on December 19, 2018, 04:05:45 PM
Carrying over from last week ... I think ...

The Dreaming #4
DC New Talent Showcase
The Batman Who Laughs #1
Batman Damned #1
Batman Damned #2
Supergirl #25

Dr. Strange #9
Fantastic Four #4   :-\ :'( >:(
The Black Order #1
The Black Order #2

Alien 3 (Gibson's Screenplay) #2
Prodigy #1
Die!Die!Die! #5
Redneck #17

Adding to the reading list week ...

Freedom Fighters #1 - The book I am most excited for this week. Been waiting for this one for almost a year!
Aquaman #43 - The new creative starts their (hopefully) epic run. I have to try it.
Justice League #14 - I was supposed to be done with this, but Tynion is writing now (from Snyder plots) so ...

Defenders: Best Defense #1 - Hoping this will end with a bang (wishing for a return of the Defenders)
Extermination #5 - The book that needed to hit before the start of Uncanny is finally hitting. I will take a peek
Marvel Knights 20th #4 - More questions or will the answers start coming?

In the maybe category -
Gideon Falls #9 - Can't remember reading #8 and I know I wanted to read this in large chunks so may wait.
Uncanny X-Men #6 - I think I may end up just waiting on all the X-stuff (this, Domino, X-Force, etc...) and read it on MU.
 :-\

My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies [/s][/color] - wow. That was depressing.  But as always, really good.

Was shocked by that ending. Haha. Was truly sad. I felt it, but that, like you added, is what made it so darn good.

Got two more down.  Knowing I'm heading out of town tomorrow to spend the weekend at my Mom's  so I knew I had to get as much done as I could before leaving.

Oblivion Song - I wish the art was better because it's pretty good right now otherwise.  I don't see this going past 12 issues as the story is coming to a close and all the secrets have been revealed.  Should be a wild ride to the end.

Captain America 698-703 -this is not good stuff. Whatever Samnee did with art on his Daredevil work does not transfer visually to be appealing in his Cap work. I'm...just going to quit this stuff until it's over or switches teams

Black Panther 168-172- Interesting. I think. A cerebral, well developed story. Not sure it was entertaiining, per se, but ...good reading.

Another Punisher War Machine issue (still like this ! Har!)
That Old Man Logan with Kraven hunting him (seriously, how is Kraven ever on anyone's radar? Why couldn't this character have simply stayed dead?)
Dr. Strange 390 -a cute send off by Cates to finish his run. Wonder how Waid takes it over next month? Also, Peter talking to a spider was so hilarious I had the wife read it as well!!!

Adventures of Super Sons #2 (I'm just going to be nohting but pissed by older Jon Kent with Bendis' hackneed bullshit writing of that)
DeathStroke: Arkham story part 1: no one should ever let Priest walk away from any comic writing ever again. He'd write Forbush Man, and I'd buy it in floppies, trades, and premium hardcover.

Thor; legacy of Jane Foster issue; always good stuff. REALLY gonna miss Dauternann on art!

Marvel 2 in 1 issues 4,5; love the idea of the Doom universe! Ha! Unfortunately, Perry says this title dies in 3 more issues...

Juuuust finished:

Astonishing X-men 9-12; this was the last of Soule's work on the title, 'Man Called X'-I found the main Proteus issue to be just unreadable. Couldn't stand it. Then the ending occurred...I'm glad 'X' is around, but after a strong start, this year of Soule's just went and flittered around the room like a balloon letting it's air out.

Cable 155-157-This odd trip down memory lane, with the monster Metus chasing him (I've read plenty of Cable stuff...but I have no idea who Metus is or anything). I found all 3 issues to be annoying mirrors of each other that didn't do anything for me. Just...blah

Two-in-One 5,6 and Annual-Really enjoyed these! Zdarsky writes some cool stuff here! Don't let it be for naught! Maybe I'll like it more than Perry after it hits issue 8! I hope!

Man, I"m getting old back log cleared up. Got Weapon X yet (I think I will read Weapon H, then decide to not ever read another issue past the first.)

THEN!!!!

Infinity Countdown! Been stalling/waiting on that!

Also, Captain Marvel back at issue 21 or so of 'Dark Legacy.' I want to see if there is a character there that I used to love back from her Ms. Marvel days back during Secret Invasion.

After that...

Avengers #1!
Deadpool #1!
Dr. Strange #1!
Thor #1!
Ant-man and Wasp #1!
Black Panther #1!

We'll see what makes the cut. ;)

Weapon X 15-19; not terribly interesting. Not feeling the vibe here. Not even sure I'll give the 'want to look at the car accident' rubber necking look to Weapon H.

Avengers #1- alright cool, let's follow this! Although big jaw Tony looks weird. Thanks McGuiness.

Thor #1- I do not like Del Mundo's art at all. It's all like colors a top like coloring. If this is where Thor's art is at for a long time in Aaron's run, I'm going to be sorely disappointed.

Yeah I passed on H and dropped X after this run. I didn’t enjoy it.

Captain America 698-703 -this is not good stuff. Whatever Samnee did with art on his Daredevil work does not transfer visually to be appealing in his Cap work.

Yep. Agree. And the same can be (will be) said later about another title or two

Doctor Strange 1

Is this the current Mark Waid run? If so, it doesn't start off very strong. Almost wrong in fact (almost), but I was able to hang in there and it works to a larger story that I did enjoy. That being said, I can totally get why you and Jimmy both may find this either very intriguing (for the plot and ... location  ;D) or not at all what you want to read.

Now if this is NOT the current Waid run, just ignore everything I just typed above  :D

Astonishing X-men 9-12; this was the last of Soule's work on the title, 'Man Called X'-I found the main Proteus issue to be just unreadable.

Indeed. I tried to get through it as best as possible (I'm still in my "I want to like X-Men again" mood so I am suffering through more than I should at the present time) but once Soule was finished (I stopped about 2 issues into his last 6 issues I think) I jumped back on for Rosenberg's run and due to that reading, I am still hanging onto this Uncanny X-Men  (weekly for the first 10 issues) revamp, as he will be the only writer going from issue #11 on. He is currently mixed in with two other writers so sometimes his voice gets a little drowned out. He is rapidly becoming one of the top five writers at Marvel.

Two-in-One 5,6 and Annual-Really enjoyed these! Zdarsky writes some cool stuff here! Don't let it be for naught! Maybe I'll like it more than Perry after it hits issue 8! I hope!

I hope so as well, buddy. Again, it could have been issue 9, but I think issue 8 was when I started to feel less enthralled by 2-In-1. But hey, FF #1 hit around that time and I know I was pissed that that title hit before things were settled in 2-In-1 (they hadn't gotten the team back yet and FF title dropped?) so maybe that is all it was. I also remembering not really loving the way Ben and Johnny acted when ... no ... I will let you like it or not without more possible influence.

The title deserves love, so hopefully it will hit for you!!!

Infinity Countdown! Been stalling/waiting on that!

Just remember ... you have to think of this even/title as "The Guardians of the Galaxy" title for that is ALL it is. Again, Marvel higher-ups made the call to kill GotG just to pull readers into this event-that-is-not-an-event crap. If you read it as an event, I find it is less than good, but as just another arc in an ongoing title? I think it was fine. Although the last couple of issues of Infinity War have pushed that to the limits
 ::)

Avengers #1- alright cool, let's follow this! Although big jaw Tony looks weird. Thanks McGuiness.

Oh you are so alone on that. I am hating ... HATING the look of this art work. I ususally like McGuinnes, I do, but not with Jason Arron. Just no. Totally different voices. The book is so much better when David Marquez has the run. Ugh. If I'm editor, I never again put Terry with Jason. Too much conflict in tone. Even in a low vulgar book like Avengers.

Thor #1- I do not like Del Mundo's art at all. It's all like colors a top like coloring. If this is where Thor's art is at for a long time in Aaron's run, I'm going to be sorely disappointed.

Now here I agree with you. Although, just like McGuinnes, I do like Del Mundo's style, I think it needs to be with a specific partner. While on Avengers I don't like the art with the writing, here I don't like the art with the title. Del Mundo is a Jason Aaron artist. His style can fit with Aaron's writing, but not on Thor. Thor should look either bright with harsh lines (IE: Simonson) or darker with rounded off features (IE: Coipel), but not ever bright with watercolor effects. I didn't really care for Del Mundo on Dr. Strange, but it was much better suited for that book than Thor. IMHO of course
 ;D

As for me, I haven't got a lot read myself this week, so glad to see Jimmy and Jeff picking up my slack
 ;D
Of course I also went off script, again, so I may just stop listing what I am going to try and read as I never stick to the darn thing
 >:(

Added -
American Carnage #1
American Carnage #2 - Another title I was handed to read. It is okay. Not sure I will stick around monthly though
Batman #61 - Didn't list this? Oh well, great one-shot filler issue going back to someone we saw earlier in the run
A Walk Through Hell #6 - Did not know this was hitting but snatched it up like Barry Allen when I saw it. Damn, this is going to be so good once the story is complete. It is just creepy, and I usually don't feel that kind of feels when I read comics.

The Dreaming #4
DC New Talent Showcase
The Batman Who Laughs #1
Batman Damned #1
Batman Damned #2
Justice League #14
Supergirl #25 - Yep. I'm done. Decent read, but way too much better to be had and so little time to do so
Lucifer #3 - Same here. Actually have to be in a different frame of mind for this stuff. Collected for me I think
Aquaman #43 - Okay, yeah, sure, not sure why I like this, Typical "restart" fare, but pretty well done. Back on!
Freedom Fighters #1 - WOW! This was brutal!! I mean good, but did not expect things to go down like that. And there is a group of guys here that just make this book. AWESOME!!!!! Book of the week (so far)

Dr. Strange #9
Fantastic Four #4   :-\ :'( >:(
The Black Order #1
The Black Order #2
Defenders: Best Defense #1
Extermination #5
Marvel Knights 20th #4
Uncanny X-Men #6

Alien 3 (Gibson's Screenplay) #2
Prodigy #1
Die!Die!Die! #5
Redneck #17
Gideon Falls #9

Need to get back on my Marvel now ... or at least next week
  :D

And didn't get through too much more  :-\

Supergirl #25
Lucifer #3
Aquaman #43
Freedom Fighters #1
American Carnage #1
American Carnage #2
Batman #61
The Dreaming #4
DC New Talent Showcase
The Batman Who Laughs #1
Batman Damned #1
Batman Damned #2
Justice League #14

Dr. Strange #9
Fantastic Four #4   :-\ :'( >:(
The Black Order #2
Defenders: Best Defense #1
Marvel Knights 20th #4
The Black Order #1  - Wasn't expecting THIS tone. Takes the viciousness out. But I kinda like it. Art helps.
Punisher #2 - Frank vs Matt until a new threat emerges! Yep, yep, yep!!!
Extermination #5 -
Aaaaand the time-displaced X-Men are back to where they belong. Finally!!
Uncanny X-Men #6 - I have little interest in this story, not a Nate Grey fan, but trying to stay up to date for when Rosenberg takes total control at issue #11

A Walk Through Hell #6
Alien 3 (Gibson's Screenplay) #2
Prodigy #1
Die!Die!Die! #5
Redneck #17
Gideon Falls #9

May not even go to the LCS this week as there is only a couple titles hitting that I read hitting anyway, Die!Die!Die!, Uncanny X-Men and the Fantastic Four and I am in no rush to read the FF right now (which hurts me to say) and the two others I can wait on. The only thing I am really kinda chomping the bit to read is the new Superior Spidey that is coming out today (I think)
