Title: Ranking the Star Wars Movies
Post by: Jeff on July 17, 2018, 02:07:08 PM
I see rumors that Jimmy and Perry are going to resurrect the Marvel Cinematic Movie ranking list so I thought I would throw in a random thread for the ever expanding Star Wars movie franchise.  Now that we have a few more SW films in the can how would you rank them?

Here they are in chronological order in regards to story.  Re-list in order of best to worst.

The Phantom Menace - Episode 1
Attack of the Clones - Episode 2
Revenge of the Sith - Episode 3
Solo
Rogue One
A New Hope - Episode 4
The Empire Strikes Back - Episode 5
Return of the Jedi - Episode 6
The Force Awakens - Episode 7
The Last Jedi - Episode 8

And here's my list to kick it off.

1.  The Empire Strikes Back - My hands down favorite.  The father reveal, Han, Lando, Yoda.  All great.
2.  A New Hope - Close second and could almost share first place with Empire.
3.  Return of the Jedi - Ewoks aside, the Vader/Luke wrap up was satisfying.
4.  Solo - Yeah, I liked it this much.  I'm looking forward to sequels.
5.  Rogue One - I seem to be in a minority on this film but I thought it was excellent.
6.  The Force Awakens - This may warrant going up but the way Han died left a bad taste in my mouth.
7.  The Last Jedi - Ditto for the handling of Luke.
98.  Attack of the Clones - I pretend the love story parts didn't happen and then I like this ok.
99.  Revenge of the Sith - Finally got the battle between Obi-Wan and Anakin.
100.  The Phantom Menace - ironically, this film has my vote for Best Lightsaber Fight of all movies.  Unfortunately, it didn't save the movie from being terrible.

 :)

I had to skip some of your list/thoughts as I have still yet to see Solo (no reason other than will, honestly) and I didn't want to be ... spoiled by your thoughts or reaction.
 :)

I did see your bottom three on the list of one hundred  :D and I agree with them being that far down, though I would switch 98 and 99 respectfully (I thought "Revenge" at least got us pointed more towards the adult side of the movies, so that will always rank higher for me over a movie with that ridiculous Anni and Padmé rolling down that hill, giggling/acting so poorly)

Also note, although I stated I just haven't had the will to go see Solo, that lack of will has nothing to do with how it was received by fans and critics but more that I was just not wowed by the guy they picked to portray a young Solo ... even though I am sure he did a great job, it just kinda took the air out of me at first and I haven't yet pushed past it.
 :D
I plan on seeing it within the next week or so however!!
 :)

Don't worry - no spoilers at all in my comments on Solo or Rogue One.

3. A New Hope
4. Revenge of the Sith
5.  Solo
- Phantom Menace
- Force Awakens
X. Rogue One
X. Last Jedi

Posting on the phone sucks. That said, I numbered the faves in the order I would watch. The next 2, while I would not choose to watch again on my own, they fall in order of my preference of not watching them again.
Oh! Attack of the clones should be in the last 3 with an X of movies I will walk out of the room if played. Attack is second to last above Last Jedi.

The same guy who had that video about DCs movies that I posted in the DC thread (that EVERYONE should watch!!!!  >:() brought up a good point in another of his vids, this time on Star Wars. He said that a lot, if not all, of the fans of the Star Wars extended universe hated Last Jedi because of what those books and stories told of Luke.

Makes sense.

I never read too much of the extended universe and I had no problems with what they did with Luke in the movie, but if you spent years going one way, and then suddenly the movie takes you another, I can understand the hatred.

Watch the DC video and then watch his Star Wars Last Jedi one ... Oh ... and his Clone Wars one

with the caveat that i have yet to see Solo:

1. Empire Strikes Back
2. Return of the Jedi
3. A New Hope
4. Revenge of the Sith
5. Last Jedi
6. Rogue One
7. Force Awakens
8. Phantom Menace
9. Attach of the Clones

Just rearranging Wringers just a tad, but with the same caveat in place  ;)

1. Empire Strikes Back - The Best
2. A New Hope - The Catalyst
3. Return of the Jedi - Up there with Empire for best (most memorable) opening 15 minutes ever
4. Force Awakens - I think only because it was after the prequels and the bad was so much less than prior
5. Last Jedi - Other than the lightsaber throw, I thought they got movie Luke right, but lots wrong elsewhere
6. Rogue One - A hot mess all around, but still had fun bits
7. Revenge of the Sith - Started to get back to acknowledging adults like Star Wars too
8. Phantom Menace - Would be the worst if not for ...
9. Attack of the Clones - That damn hill roll

And I ABSOLUTELY understand, 100% why Luke's over the shoulder Lightsaber toss is a lot of peoples "hill roll"
 :)

EDIT -
The worst 1:40 of acting in all of Star Wars, followed by bad CGI riding an engorged tick, followed by the worst 15 seconds of all time. Yes, of all time. Keep in mind I was on fire at one point in my life.
 ;D
The worst scene in Star Wars

No No NO!  I've erased this from my memory so Attack of the Clones can go higher in my list.  I will NOT watch this!

That is the absolute worst, yes!

*

Having read tons of Star wars things, it's not that last Jedi diverged from those stories. It's that the movie sucked ass, and turned every hero in our Great American Classic into an utter failure.

This movie collapsed everything Luke, Han, and Leia had become. They might as well not even had made it. If it was a passing of the torch to a new generation, they forgot to mention they used that torch to set fire to the originals.

Yeah.  If you think about it, the first three films were passing the torch from Obi-Wan and Yoda to Luke.  Even though both were in hiding, neither had lost their way.  They had become the aged, wise elders and passed down their knowledge to the new generation.

These new films should have been the same.  Luke should have  been the new wise old elder passing his knowledge down to a new jedi or jedi's.  At least the stories in the prequels made sense and stayed true to it's characters for the most part.

And I totally disagree with that.  :)
Leah is still going strong, well ...  >:( >:( :'(
Han was strong til the end, that bitter, bitter end
and Luke lost faith but then found it again, as he should have done.

Leia, an integral figure of the Rebellion, and then the New Republic, lost standing with them, and had to be a General to another set of Rebels to the Empire that was not defeated at the end of ROTJ. (this is from source books). Also, her kid turned out like shit, and was lost to them.
Han left his wife, his family, and the Rebellion/Republic that caused him to grow into a better man to once again become a thief and smuggler. And his kid turned out like shit.
Luke, who ideally fought the greatest evil out there, didn't blanche when he saw it was his father, gave (almost) everything to do what was right, and then later failed in everything he did with a New Jedi order, and almost killed a kid because of 'what may' happen. Then he just quit life and hid like a fucking coward, which was not ANYTHING like the Luke we saw.

What they fought for all ended in ruin and failure for them in their lives.

What crap.

For those that say 'for SW to grow, you must burn down what happened before to make it grow anew from the ashes' don't understand (in my thinking) why they are special.

Ruining the myths that SW represent does not make a better product. Just make a better product.

I see what you mean for Leia.  I didn't get that this was a new rebel group and not what was left of the New Republic.  That is dumb.  I like the story that they had a kid who turned out like shit - that's good drama and he does have Anakin's genes.  Kid's often romanticize the people who have passed before them over what their parents teach.  Because, as you will find out in about 11 years, they know better than their parents.   :D  (Of course, by the time they hit their 30's most have figured out Mom & Dad were a lot smarter than they thought - unless Perry's your dad.  HAHA -just kidding Perry).

Han left his wife, his family, and the Rebellion/Republic that caused him to grow into a better man to once again become a thief and smuggler. And his kid turned out like shit.

Another good point.  Han wouldn't leave Leia.  I can see him going out on "jobs" for weeks at a time but he would always come back to her.  He also wouldn't have been such an idiot with Ben out on the bridge.  He would have been more of a Dad coming down on his bad kid instead of a touchy feely Dad who stands there why his kid kills him.

Agree with you on Luke although I didn't hate the movie as much as you.  Even if I bought into the premise of Luke running away and hiding.  The true Luke would have left with...oh what's her name....crap I already forgot her name....anyway he would have left with her to help Leia.

I hope I don't sound too terribly much like a prick from my prior post, but I really feel all the characters were made to look like failures. That doesn't sit well with me in the heroic adventures tales that SW emulates.

1.  The Empire Strikes Back - Masterpiece
2.  A New Hope- Very, very close second
3.  Return of the Jedi- Didnt quite live up to the first two but still one of my favorite movies of all.
4.  The Force Awakens- Actually liked this one quite a bit.  My favorite character will always be R2D2, but Kylo Ren has become a strong second.
5.  The Last Jedi- Liked this one a lot too.  I found the whole business on Canto Bight tiresome, but find myself in the minority in my generation in that I actually was satisfied with the deconstruction aspects of the story.
6.  Solo- Really enjoyed this one, much more than the critics.
7.  Rogue One - I liked this one a lot, but got kind of tired toward the end.  Although the scene with Vader viciously just tearing through that ship may be enough for me to raise this up a notch.  May have to think on this.
98.  Revenge of the Sith - Could have been a decent movie if someone else played Anakin.  And some one else wrote the screenplay.
99.  Attack of the Clones - See above.
100.  The Phantom Menace - An advertisement for Happy Meal toys set to a John Williams score.
