Title: Avengers Infinity War
Post by: Perry on April 24, 2018, 12:34:43 PM
So I am hearing, all over Twitter, that this movie rocks. Has blown the face off most if not all people that I "follow" that have seen it, with many more of them posting other quotes like "You will love this movie. My jaw is still on the floor! Avoid Spoilers!"

With that in mind, I am changing my usual the Tuesday or Wednesday, after the opening week-end, matinee viewing around 10 or 11, to this Friday at 8:40. Not trying to go an entire week, much less all week-end trying to avoid spoilers.
 :)

Someone took the time to take all of the trailers and clip them together in chronological order.  Gave me chills by the time I got to the end.  DEFINITELY gotta see it this weekend!!

That was pretty good...but have you seen the recent "How it should have ended" prequal for this movie...freaking funny as hell
https://www.cbr.com/avengers-infinity-war-dead-pool-short/ (https://www.cbr.com/avengers-infinity-war-dead-pool-short/)

oh yea...really looking forward to this but not sure when i'll get to see it...pretty confident i can avoid spoilers as i just saw Black Panther for the 1st time on Tuesday, having never been spoiled and enjoyed it thoroughly.

Good job. :)

Sadly I have yet to see Panther and like you, so far, I was also able (lucky enough  :D) to avoid all things spoiler related. But now that I am going to see Infinity today, I know there will be spoilers ALL OVER this movie  :( But I just couldn't make it to the theater the night we were suppose to go see it. I really wanted to see it, but never made it out to do so. I guess the end credits will not be a surprise when I see them now.
 :D

Still, here's hoping that the spoilers today will be light.
 :D

3 more hours!!!!
 :)

EDIT - I did take a peek at Rotten Tomatoes to see the updated "score" and this movie has now dropped to 86% fresh rating.
 :-\
That is a 10% drop from the last time I checked ... hope most of those votes that made that puppy drop are from the "expert" critics and not fans. I mean, 86% is still a great score, but I was hearing a lot higher at first and now I am questioning some of the posts that I had seen. Which is good I suppose, keep those expectations tamped down.
 ;D

Okay, I have only 5 minutes so I am gonna be quick and just quote the wife, who is ... okay with the Marvel movies, but I wouldn't call her "a fan".

While the credits were rolling and we were waiting on this "huge" after credit scene  ::), I asked her
"So, what'da think?"
Her reply actually surprised me
"Oh it was wonderful"
She said this with an hoest smile on her face. She really liked it.

As did I

Great movie, talk more later

Title: Re: Avengers Infinity War
Post by: Perry on April 28, 2018, 05:54:10 AM
Okay, some more IW talk ...

This, for me, even though it is a two parter, ranks up there with Captain America: Civil War as far as greatness goes. Honestly, right now it is even higher, but I am suspecting that is being "high on after buzz" and the feeling will fade and Cap will once again rule as my number one ... but not yet ... yeah ... actually, right now, this is my favorite.

Again ... you will absolutely be blown away by this movie (and hopefully the new Deadpool trailer which was awesome!!)

But hey ... I do want to say something, or a couple things, that are spoilers so STAY AWAY UNTIL YOU SEE THE MOVIE (even though one is not really a spoiler ... STAY AWAY)
 :)
I am only touching two or three of the things that I loved and didn't like, but nothing major. Just little things that hit me. And don't let the bad things be the thing you take away. This movie is almost perfection in everyway, but just a couple minor things I loved. Again, stay away until you see the movie!!!!

First the personal minor good -
I love, love, love the way this movie shows how strong two of my favorite characters actually are. One was Thor, but I guess we all knew that one. But the way they showed how powerful Dr. Strange can be, after not showing it in his own movie, was a sight of pure pleasure. Yes, Strange is powerful as hell!!! And this movie showed it. FINALLY

Second, the personal minor bad -
Sadly, they overpowered Tony in my opinion. I don't mind him being the "tech" genius, but damn it, he is not War Machine. He had so many gadgets of battle this time it wasn't funny. Iron Man should be somewhat limited people. Not the end all be all of tech. He shouldn't have EVERYTHING on his armor. Okay, not hating, just saying.

Third, the actual minor bad  :-\ -
In the scene when Panther, Cap and ... I forget, are talking to Cull Obsidian and Proxima Midnight at the energy shield and then, seconds later we see them almost a mile back from the edge of the energy shield starting the command to attack? How did they get all the way back to that point when they were JUST at the damn edge of the shield? "OH EDITING!"

Fourth, my favorite resolution -
While Tony and Peter are on the spacecraft and Ebony Maw is taunting Tony about how much more powerful he is than Tony and Tony replies with something along the line of "yeah, but you don't have a teenager that watches movies" and uses the Alien 4 'suck you through a hole' strategy of ending the fight  :D :D So cool! (but there are sooooo many more cool moves and scenes in this movie!!

Honestly, as much as I love Captain America Civil War, this movie may well be the only movie since ... Empire Strikes Back ... yeah ... that I want to go back to the theater and see again ... at least two more times. That is how good this movie is.
 8)

86% on Rotten Tomatoes? BAH

99% for me!!!!

EDIT - Oh yeah, I was pretty worried going in about Black Panther spoilers, haven not seen Panther yet, but other than not knowing the film versions of the characters and one brief conversation that I suspect is a pretty important Panther scene, there was no drop off of enjoyment at all. I had no issues and neither should anyone of you that has yet to see Panther (Am I the only one in America?  :D)

It's okay buddy, the Hulk will just look more ... HULK'ish
 :)

EDIT - I just realized I have been telling everyone, including Jeff now, that I think this movie beats out my previous favorite Cap movie, Civil War, but holy hell, I mean my favorite Cap movie Winter Soldier. Not sure how I kept thinking the Hydra one was Civil War. I am an idiot!!!
I put this ahead of, as of right now, Captain America: Winter Soldier

Well, Put it ahead of Civil War also, but that is not what I meant.
 :D

Yes you are.

Even though I agree that you donít need to see Black Panther to enjoy this movie, your enjoyment will be greatly enhanced if you see it first.

But Perry is right.  Itís a great movie.  Iím not sure where Iíd rank it yet.  To date my favorite has been Winter Soldier.  This movie is definitely going to be in the top tier.

I'm with Perry on this one (and i still can't believe he saw a movie in the theaters on opening weekend before I did) in stating that this may be my new favorite Marvel flick behind TWS and CW.  This was epicness on an epic scale and even though the run time was 2 hr 40 min., it felt like it went by very quickly and another hour or two would have been just fine with me.

Let's get into it, shall we?

the movie starts off going 0-120 in like 3 seconds.  Is Loki really dead?  I loved how Thor came across the GOTG and Starlord's reaction to him.  Drax is always awesome.  I'm not sure what the significance of Rocket giving Thor the new eyeball is unless it was just to keep Thor from sporting an eyepatch all movie.

We finally get to see Dr.Strange cut loose and it was phenomenal.  The interaction between Stark, Strange and Banner was great.

I loved it when Cap showed up.  Although my daughter said it took her about 30 minutes to figure out who he was.
(I swear she's my child, really)

We finally get to find out what happened to the Red Skull.  That was unexpected but totally worth it and I'm glad they kept it under wraps.  I read where Ross Marquand of Walking Dead fame played the Skull and I honestly thought it was Hugo Weaving.  I hope this opens him up to returning in a future Cap film.

Loved Banner in the Hulkbuster suit but kept expecting Hulk to bust out of it.  I'm curious to see where that is heading.

The crowd actually applauded when Thor showed up with Stormbreaker.  (and BTW, how great was Dinklage's role)

I was totally expecting Iron Man and Cap to disappear or be outright killed off.  Totally didn't expect some of those characters to start dissipating. It was like they took all the phase 3 characters and wiped them out.  Spidey, Doc Strange, Black Panther, yep, didn't see that coming.

I'm pretty sure Strange knew what he was doing by giving Thanos the stone.  He did tell Tony that out of 14 million some odd timelines, they only beat him in one and the never said how.

All of the fight scenes were fantastic and I plan on going to see it a few more times.

Now for my few dislikes,
Why didn't Stark just try cutting Thanos' arm off on Titan instead of just pulling the glove off?

I'm not a big fan of the MCU Spidey (and I still don't like the Iron Spider suit.).  He just seems to depend on Stark too much.

Why didn't Strange tell them how Thanos was beaten in the one timeline and WHY DIDN'T TONY ASK HIM?!?!?!

During the end credits scene, I was so hoping that a big encircled "4" was going to show up on Fury's pager or whatever that was.

I think that is one of those "ya have to let go" moment because "comics". I mean, if he told him then there would be no need for A4, right?  :D Besides, then we wouldn't have people complaining about Strange giving up the Time Gem ...*ahem* Time Stone not realizing the reason he gave it up was he obviously saw the one way to defeat Thanos was doing just that. Which hey, maybe there was an alternate timeline where Strange DID tell Tony and that was one of the ones that was unsuccessful, so he chose not to this time?
 :D :D :D (Okay, no, but hey ...)

And don't get me started on the end credits. BULLLLLL SHIIIIT

The fact it was nothing.
Okay, yeah, we get to see Nick and ... Colby get caught in traffic when almost getting hit by another SUV, then after agent what's her name (damn i can't remember her name) goes ashes to ashes, dust to dust, Fury hits his super pager and almost got the word mother fucker out before turning to dust himself while we get to see that super pager is making a call and now has an 8bit symbol of Captain Marvel on it? Yawn.
I avoided spoilers for two days, I want to an 8:00 AM showing on (essentially) opening day so I would not get spoiled by this "Great" ending credits scene and THIS is what it was?
BAH.
Pffft.
Piss on that.
>:(
Worst end credit scene of any Marvel movie.
 :P

EDIT -
MARIA HILL!!! Damn I couldn't remember her name for anything

Now don't get me wrong, had I not been ... forced into over-excitement over the darn thing, it wouldn't have bothered me. I still wouldn't have found it worthy of staying JUST to see that, I mean I would still have stayed, but, yeah, it was just so mundane that I shoulder shrugged along with half the theater (which there were only about 20 of us ... man I love that theater!!!) while the other half was asking "what was that?", which I guess is good, get them asking and hopefully investigating, I suppose.

Definitely sounds like it was high expectations.  I felt that way on the first Avengers which is why I think them just sitting around eating sandwiches is the worst after credits scene.  At least this one went along with the story even though it wasn't necessary.

I hear ya, but at least that one was an afterthought. I mean, you can't even see Caps face because he had already started growing a beard for another role, so they hid his chin behind his hands the entire time.

Saw it last night for the first time and felt a little underwhelmed by it.  :-\  It would rank it somewhere in the middle for me.

THE GREAT:  Can't recall any great "crowining moments of awesome" from the movie but some things were great.
1)  Seeing Dr. Strange finally letting loose with his powers.
2)  The cool "Chekov's gun / brick joke" element of having Red Skull finally show up as the keeper of the Soul Stone.
3)  Rocket eyeing Bucky's arm.  :D
4)  Thor is not only a total badass in this movie, he's also consistently hilarious doing it.

THE GOOD:
1)  The moments between Thanos and Gamora were well done.  Thanos was a decent villain.
2)  Finally seeing the respective powers of infinity stones specifically manifested instead of  just being vague McGuffins and exotic power sources
3)  Peter Dinklage raises the quality of any scene he's in.  I was slightly irritated that they cast him as a dwarf but at least he was a very big one.

THE OKAY:
1)  I like T'Challa's little sister, but she's veering dangerously close to Mary Sue territory with her godlike technical genius.
2)  With the exception of Thanos & Gamora and little bits with Thor, character development didn't really happen with so many heroes jammed into the plot.
3)  Humor was spotty.  Thor was consistently funny in his moments, but I thought the funny moments with the Guardians felt forced and not as natural as in their own movies.  Also, Peter is a scientific prodigy but seems to only come up with plans involving "a really old movie" - we did this already.
4)  Thanos sought to control all of the infinity stones to... control excess population growth.  ...  In an infinite universe.   ::)   Suspending my disbelief and placing this one in the "okay" category here instead of below.

THE BAD:
1)  I love the Guradians but I found myself irritated by them in most of their scenes.  Star-lord is an immature jerk with a heart of gold -yeah, I got that already.  Drax is big, strong, and stupid- yeah, I got that too.  Manitis is...etc, etc.  Even though it was fun to see them working with eveyone else, I was disappointed with their lack of dimension and the forced humor here.
2)  I don't like Puny Banner and I like Mark Ruffalo even less.  When I buy a ticket to see the climax of the MCU, I want to see Hulk tearing stuff up, not Ruffalo's puffy little face peeking out of Hulkbuster armor.  If they were only going to show Banner, they should have left him in the palace taking algebra lessions from Shuri.

And spoiler for both this movie AND the recent Guardians of the Galaxy comic ... so maybe not read this if you are reading GotG on MU ... at least until you get to the end of that last arc ...

But I am betting that, like in the comic, Gamora is now trapped in the Soul Gem ... damn it ... Soul STONE  ::)

And to go a little further in thought, that is and Spoiler for the movie only -

It is almost certain that Thanos' location, at the end of the movie, when he is a happy farmer, is much like the comic, is in the Soul Stone. When they show him at his farm house, that sky is almost the same color as the Gem  *sigh* Stone itself. But what intrigues me is how they will work with that idea (if true) that people are inside the Gem itself. Will people accept that idea? I mean, non-comic fans of course.

The 3 Captain America movies, the 2 Guardians movies, the first Iron Man, and the first Avengers movie.  So there's 7 off the top of my head for sure.  Probably Dr. Strange.  Maybe Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Look, I didn't hate the movie.  In its defense, it's really only half of a movie anyway so maybe it will grab me a little differently after I see the rest of it when it comes out.

:D  Actually, I really don't care too much for Hulk either.  I'd just rather see him than Banner.
Maybe they thought they only needed one "Big Guy" (Thor) in that fight.  By the way, I may be mistaken, but was Thor sporting the "Ultimate" look there at the end?

Yeah, that makes sense.
For one thing, we didn't really see what, in fact, that stone actually does.  The movie does a great job at finally showcasing the individual powers of the stones to their full abilities.

Secondly, you know that those guys didn't die but just went somewhere else.  I must admit that like most folks, they had me when Bucky evaporated.  But when the rest disintegrated, you knew that Marvel tucked these guys away somewhere.  Marvel has to know that no one is going to be fooled into thinking they would actually kill off Black Panther.

One comment about that.  Spidey's scene was especially gut-wrenching.  It was all the more impressive when I read that he actually improvised that scene.

Took the kiddo to see it tonight.

After second viewing I have to say I may be going over to Perryís side on this.  It just might be in my top three now.

My poor daughter kept asking ďWhereís Black Panther?Ē  Then when Wakanda appeared she practically squealed with excitement.

Then....
poor thing left the movie devastated.

Here I go!!

I really liked it. I truly did! But I have comments or criticisms as well. More comments, I think. Or rather, commentary rather.

This movie truly is 10 years within the making. Because, without having seen the other movies before, most of the movie could be considered worthless. But, that's the leeway you get when you put 10 awesome years together of movies; it's all established, go and do what you want!

Which is what makes Avengers into a really good action movie. I loved the entire trip of it, and when I went to see it a second time in the same weekend...I'm not sure I felt the same kind of wonder or magic to it.

Quick hits
-I continue to hate most of the Iron Man armors after IM 2 and Avengers. This utterly super powered thing just doesn't do it for me in the movie.
-I continue to hate that Spider-man's effectiveness hinges upon what gifts the Great Wizard of OzStarktech grants him. The comic Spidey was so revolutionary because of the 'everyman'-a teenage guy, sewing his own suit, making his own gadgets, and webbing (and running out because he's just a poor kid!). That part is gone, to me, from the character in the movie. I love Holland, but I want more for his Spidey.

Thanos

Dr.Strange

Poor Guardians representation

Jimmy, I totally agree with you on that Spider-Man viewpoint.

And I respect both of your viewpoints, but
didn't we get that in like the first 55 Spider-Man movies? I mean, yes, he is getting more "things" from Stark, but I don't see that as taking over who or what Spider-Man is nor his effectiveness. He is still a bumbling kid trying to make his way through things. And I don't see it as needing Stark (or his gadgets) as much as a kid inventor being in awe of an elder inventor (in the Spider-Man movie) and (here) being a kid saying hell yeah to a new ipad instead of a newspaper. That is what kids are like as well.
Plus he is the one that figured out how to deal with Maw don't forget, and used a teenagers infatuation of movies to do it. It is still the same Peter, just a shinier costume. I don't hold that against him.

I loved all the Spidey moments myself.  :)

I swear I'm having a freaky Friday moment with Perry and we have somehow switched bodies.  First, he goes and sees a new Marvel movie at the theater before I do and now I dislike something about said Marvel movie and he is defending it.

What. Is. Happening?

What. Is. Happening?

I know, right?
 :D

I had free tickets to the Deadpool opening and I had to turn them down. I just couldn't see it before you  ... I could not do that to you, to the universe, again.
