Title: The Team/Era you just wish you could have back
Post by: Jimmy T on June 22, 2017, 02:33:19 AM
Now, I don't mean that the duo gets back together now to try and recreate the magic.

What book/series/character/era do you wish you could have just a bit more from?

Take the Dark Phoenix Saga; John Byrne was gone after that; just imagine what another year of Claremont and Byrne could have been like?

How about more Priest Black Panther with Sal Velluto? (ok my fave here)

Micheline/Bright/Layton Iron Man?

PAD/Dale Keown Hulk?

George Perez/Perez Wonder Woman?

Waid/Ringo Flash?
 etc et cetera

For me, I dearly wish for the PAD/ChrisCross era of Captain Marvel (2000). Genis Vell, and his title, still remain as one of my all time favorite highlights of mixed comedy, action, snark, drama, and loss. I love this title to death. Rereading it right now.

The title didn't have great sales, came under fire when Bill Jemas said he could write better, PAD promoted the hell out of it, even had artists like Carlos Pacheco (non inking years though :( ), Ivan Reis, and Aaron Lopresti on the title.

If I could somehow just have a time machine of that era of PAD/ChrisCross tell me another year or two...I'd be in heaven.

Is there any team/book creator team you would have just loved see do some more magic for you?

Easy answer for me as it is (perhaps) the ONLY reason I am back to reading comics today. Who knows, I may have walked back into the LCS in another 5 years and something else grabbed my attention, but this is the comic and the team that returned my eyes to comics after all that 90's crap.

I wish that Bedard and Pelletier would come back for Negation.

Mine would be Wolfman Perez Titans.  I was already reading Flash but this is what hooked me into comics.

Way too many great runs out there that i would loved to have seen extended

I would agree wholeheartedly with CapMarvel....great series.

For me and should it be obvious...i would have loved more Doug Moench/Bill Sienkiewicz MoonKnight.  That was the team (Pre MK#1 backups from Rampaging Hulk Magazine) that really got me actively collecting and searching out specific characters/creators

2nd would be Peter Gillis/Brent Anderson's Strikeforce: Moritori...it was such a departure from what was being presented and had a great twist for the consequences of power.

"Bohica..."

Man, I loved those 9 issues. Utterly to death. I wish that story could have had some kind of finish on it's own.

The pair have been united on the Hulk title, and Aquaman, but nothing came close to Bedard/Pelletier on Negation.

You know, I can remember you raving about this title, ptsteelers?

In fact, you are the reason I picked it up at issue 5. I went back and bought them all (except #2; that was gone or sold out at my LCS), and I never regretted it. :)

This is continually on my trade buying wish list. I just haven't pulled the trigger for fear of not loving it enough because of it being dated and me being so much older now.

But....I think I still may get there at some point...

I have that MK in the Marvel Essentials..and if anything, I think it may honestly be better in the black and white on the newsprint paper to totally get all of Sienkiewicz' art. This is stuff that really holds up.

Let me ease your fears and say yes, it is dated.  ;D

However, I still enjoy it in the same way I can enjoy those pretty badly written Legion of Super-Heroes comics that I am such a fan of  ;D

I've thought about this for a while.  As much as I loathe what he ultimately went on to write, the run I remember enjoying the most, the run that got me back into comics, was JMS's run on AMS with JRJr, specifically (very specfically) ASM #471-508.

I would have loved to have seen a continuation of that run in the pre-Sins Past continuity before Deodato came on board and Editorial Meddling tanked the whole enchilada.

Sadly and ironically, the writer that got me to start picking up comics again was also at least partially responsible for me dropping Marvel.

Well, in all fairness, your love can still be strong as he didn't really want to do most of what the "Uppers" told him to, so his writing is still in good standing.

I even liked the Spider-Totem stuff and I know damn well that is blasphemous
 :D :D

I hated the totem stuff. HATED Morlun. HATED.

That said, after or around the time (okay, definitely after) ASM 36, I got into the groove with JMS. The maturity that he wrote the characters with just spoke to me. I thought I was in heaven.

Then Sins Past.

then Sins Past.....

then One More Day.....

I know not his fault, but man....what a shit show that turned out to be...

It helps drastically for me that JMS' run had John Romita Jr., Scott Hanna, Richard Starkings, and Wes Abbot on the art. Probably in the top five of the best art eras that book has ever had.

The 616 Spidey books - with Paul Jenkins associated exceptions - had been so not entertaining for me by this time, I was open to the totem thing. I wanted to follow to see where it went, what was Ezekiel's deal, and how would Spidey would stop Morlun. (Don't get me wrong, I never needed a Morlun return, I just liked him for that first arc.)

I also like Shathra, the Spider Wasp villain. She had sinister stalker vibe that the original Venom once had before becoming the "lethal protector" anti-hero.

Not to mention Digger - the pile of dead mobster left in the Las Vegas desert and gamma radiation tests caused them to form into one living being. Cool concept. Also opened the door to a potential new villain with the mobster's daughter that Spidey double-crossed. Unfortunate nothing came from that, AFAIK.

Still the greatest thing about the JMS/JR JR run was Peter becoming a school teacher at Midtown High. I still think that was one of the best things to happen to Parker's character since the 80's.

Second best part of the run was Aunt May finding out Peter was Spider-Man. The confrontation between the two was justifiably given a whole issue to breathe. I thought it was beautifully done and felt incredibly real. May's character after that - I still believe - should've been trying to get Peter to stop being Spider-Man. Not out right, but behind Peter's back and trying to get Mary Jane to help her push for the same.

The other issues had some great moments (the return of Doc Ock) and some very forgettable ones (the Loki's daughter story).

Despite my approval, once "Sins Past" came out, I tried the first issue and decided to drop the whole book.

I wasn't "offended" like some folks were. I didn't dig the "kids" angle. Having kids who conveniently "due to the goblin formula in Norman's DNA" were now full grown and hated Spider-Man... felt like they were trying to hard to shock us. And I was also tired of Spidey books retreading on Parker's college years with Gwen. Been there, done that.

At least they weren't Parker's kids like JMS originally planned. That would just be weird. One of the few times I'm glad Marvel stepped in.

I forgot Digger! No, that was damned cool!! I thought that was well within JMS firing on all cylinders there.

Him writing an adult, strong Aunt May was very good. Loved that Peter did something good with his life as a teacher.

Sins Past could only have been made even worse then the Goblin children being Peter's children. That would be the only way it could have been worse. I mean, not by much, with the current story still being Norman roofy-ing Gwen, but still, it would have been worse.

With JMS/JRJr on ASM #471-508 being my first pick, I'd also like to give an honorable mention to Jay Faerber and Mahmud A. Asrar on Dynamo 5.  A really original storyline that I felt was left before it reached its full potential.

BTW, I agree with whoever mention PAD/Keown on The Incredible Hulk.

I'd also like to throw in PAD/Todd Nauck on Young Justice.

Good call, sir.

Obviously the CW Network is owned - at least partly - by Warner Brothers so you're going to get a lot of DC related material.

However, if that wasn't the case, I think Dynamo 5 would've been perfect for that network.

Cloak & Daggertoo. Though that's suppose to go to Freeform, which might be just as good for that material.
