Title: Rate the Marvel Studios Movies
Post by: Perry on April 15, 2014, 05:45:41 AM
Okay folks, how would you, the discerning Marvel movie viewer, rate the current crop of Marvel Movies?

Here is how I rate 'em -

1- CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER
2- THE AVENGERS
3- IRON MAN
4- CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER
5- THOR
6- IRON MAN 2
7- THOR: DARK WORLD
8- IRON MAN 3
9- THE INCREDIBLE HULK

I could easily switch 4 and 5 ... and I think I should, but I am still living on the high of the current Cap flick so I think that is effecting me. But then again, I think my love of Thor may be forcing me to say that.  :D

I could also switch 8 and 9, as neither is what I would consider "bad" *Not like that Ang Lee Hulk ... ugh) and should not really be last on any list, but just the others are so good ya got no choice.

So, how about you guys?

EDIT -
Or ... if you're feeling really "grady", how about rating all of the Marvel based movies since 1998, the year the first real successful Marvel based movie came out - BLADE!!! (You can include that Dolph Lundgren Punisher movie from 1989 if you want to  ;), but as it was not a "successful" theatrical release ... made only $500,00 and that was outside of the US, as it was direct to video here ... I am starting with the first one that was, BLADE).

Listed in order of release date -

Blade
X-Men
Blade II
Spider-Man
Daredevil
X2
Hulk
The Punisher
Spider-Man 2
Blade: Trinity
Elektra
Man-Thing
Fantastic Four
X-Men: The Last Stand
Ghost Rider
Spider-Man 3
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Iron Man
The Incredible Hulk
Punisher: War Zone
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Iron Man 2
Thor
X-Men: First Class
Captain America: The First Avenger
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance
The Avengers
The Amazing Spider-Man
Iron Man 3
The Wolverine
Thor: The Dark World
Captain America: The Winter Soldier

I will have to come back with my list

Challenge accepted!

1- THE AVENGERS
2- CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER
3- IRON MAN
4- THOR: DARK WORLD
5- CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER
6- IRON MAN 2
7- THOR
8- IRON MAN 3
9- THE INCREDIBLE HULK

I think I'm looking at the Avengers as number 1 because there has been more time since it's release. I'm very 'glowy' about Winter Soldier right now, but Avengers just gets to win out due to the fact they actually made it!!

But yes, 4 and 5 could be switched around. And I really, REALLY liked Dark World  alot more over the first one.

And I could even switch 8 and 9 around. RDJ makes IM3, but there are parts of that movie that just really irritate me. Hulk just suffers because of it's actors alot. I thought everyone was awful except for Blonsky.

 1- The Avengers
2- Captain America: The Winter Soldier
 3- Iron Man
 4- Thor: The Dark World
5- Captain America: The First Avenger
 6- Spider-Man
 7- The Amazing Spider-Man
 8- Blade II
 9- X2
10- Iron Man 2
11- Spider-Man 2
12- Fantastic Four
13- X-Men: First Class
14- Thor
15- Blade
16- Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
17- X-Men
18- Iron Man 3
19- The Incredible Hulk
20- Daredevil (*The Directors Cut; cuz the theatrical release makes no sense)
21- The Punisher
22- Spider-Man 3
23- Hulk
24- The Wolverine
25- Blade: Trinity
26- Punisher: War Zone
27- X-Men Origins: Wolverine
28- X-Men: The Last Stand
29- Elektra
30- Ghost Rider
31- *Man-Thing (never saw it, but have a hard time imagining it worse than 'Spirit'  :D )
32- Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

VERY HARD to crack that top 5. Spider-man almost did it; I just know that First Avenger is a technically better done movie. That, and I recognize Raimi's movie mannerisms, and they irritate me some at points. And, it gets to go that high because, well, it's SPIDER-MAN! It was truly the first time he was done right, sensationally, and with huge fanfare and much love. It is sitting on a pedestal just below Superman: The Movie. You DON'T touch Superman....but Spider-man you can....but not a lot, to be honest. ;)

*EDIT Used to have Thor at 12, but moved it down. Then I edited 4 others! Ok, no more tinkering

Okay, my run at it ... and I will try and limit me editing to only 2 or 3 times, though like Jimmy, I am sure I will want to tweek the hell out of this.
 ;D

1- Captain America: The Winter Soldier
 2- The Avengers
 3- Iron Man
4- Captain America: The First Avenger
 5- Thor
 6- Iron Man 2
 7- Thor: Dark World
 8- Spider-Man
 9- X-Men: First Class
10- X2
11- Spider-Man 2
12- X-Men
13- Amazing Spider-Man
14- Iron Man 3
15- Incredible Hulk
16- Blade
17- Blade 2
18- X-Men Origins: Wolverine
19- Daredevil (Yes, the directors cut)
20- The Wolverine
21- Hulk
22- Spider-Man 3
23- X-Men: The Last Stand
24- Fantastic Four
25- Fantastic Four: Rise of the Surfer
26- Blade: Trinity
27- Ghost Rider
28- Elektra
29- Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance
30- Man-Thing
31 -The Punisher
32- Punisher: War Zone

A couple notes -

I totally get why Jimmy has Avengers at the top. Great flick and has that "I can't believe they got all these damn heroes together and are making this movie F'n work" feel. It is not scared about being a freaking' super-hero movie and embraces itslef as being one. I just liked Cap WS better as a movie, even though the spectacle that is Avengers will always be towards the top for me.
 :)

As I stated in another thread, I never saw Punisher: War Zone, so that has to go last, while the other Punisher and that Man-Thing are "films" that I just couldn't sit through. I was able to laugh more at the Man-Thing, so it gets a little more praise.
 :D

Bottom line for me ... the first 11 are really stand-outs to me, the bottom 11 are all pretty much horrid to me, while the middle 10 are pretty adjustable up and down a few spots depending on my mood. I guess, collectively, I would list them in groups:
1-5 = Outstanding films the I truly love
6-11 = Great films films that really respect
12-21 = Really cool, lazy Saturday viewings. Watch no matter how many times I have seen them
22-32 = Really bad, I'd rather do yard work on Saturday than to sit through these damn things
 :D

Also really saddened to see FF so high up on Jimmy's list. As an avid FF fan, I just cringe at both those FF movies. An utter travesty what the did with Reed, Sue and of course, Dr. Doom ... or in this film, Dr. Disapproval. But of course, in the grand scheme of things, he only has that movie 12 spots higher than I do.
 :D

Here's hoping that the next 3 flicks coming out this year will push us to knock some films out of our top 10!!!!!!  :)

Title: Re: Rate the Marvel Studios Movies

What can I say? The FF movies are a little 'safe' for all audiences, and really meant to capture all and not offend any. I can certainly recognize it. The beats were all there, and yes, it wasn't always a great song. But I loved Johnny and Ben, Sue did well in opposition to Reed, and Reed...okay, Reed was more than boring to me, but he really tried hard!

Doom? Heh...yeah, no. His manipulations in the second were at least more spot on to what Doom should be, at least.

And they totally fall into my 'love it on a Saturday' category. I can always finish them with a smile on my face.

Now, the third film of any franchise....all mostly sad. IM3 certainly tops out as best, and that was maligned a bunch in my eyes.

I haven't seen Winter Soldier yet, so I'll have to omit that one until this weekend.

BTW, Punisher: War Zone is a Marvel Studios movie, too. I just haven't seen it, also coming this weekend (in my Netflix).

1. Iron Man
2. Captain America: The First Avenger
3. Avengers
4. Thor
5. Thor: Dark World
6. Incredible Hulk
7. Iron Man 2
8. Iron Man 3

I thought Punisher War Zone was far and away better than the Thomas Jane version.........I actually liked it a whole lot.  But that's just me.

It was a shame that Punisher: War Zone didn't fare better.  It was brutal and violent like Frank Castle needed to be.

And I just made time last night so I can finally check it out on Netflix, but it looks like it is no longer up there.

My damn luck.  >:(

(Started CHUCK instead. Only lasted the first two episodes originally, so gonna see if I can get past more)  ;D

Here's my run at a top 10.....

My list includes the latest X-Men flick, and I could probably switch out 1 and 2 easily depending on my mood.  I'm sure this list will change once Guardians of the Galaxy comes out.  Note that I did not list Iron Man at all.  I just don't find the films as interesting as everyone else, and the last Iron Man film was terrible.

1. X-Men Days of Future Past
2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
3. The Avengers
4. Spider-Man 2
5. Captain America: The First Avenger
6. X-Men First Class
7. Thor: Dark World
8. Blade II
9. Incredible Hulk
10. Punisher War Zone

Yeah, but you're a self admitted hater of Iron Man. I wonder if that has ANYTHING to do with you not liking the movies  ;)

I am, but that didn't stop me from giving the movies a chance to impress me.  Otherwise, Avengers would've been lower on my list.

The IM movies just didn't have any lasting effects on me that would make them memorable, which is a sign of a good movie to me.

We did both. One for just studio and one for all of them.

Still, as much as I had issues with GOTG, I am surprised it didn't make your top 10, buddy. I guess I am safe from most of the tomatoes being aimed at me now
 ;D

I am going to go with my top 10 of all the movies (although most of them are going to be marvel studios flicks)

1)the avengers
2)captain America: the winter soldier
3)iron man
4)captain America: the 1st avenger
5)spiderman 2

Not counting Spiderman, we have 4 of the same top 5 ... on a Marvel Studios only board  ;D Of course if you look back you will see I had Spider-Man 2 at my 11th spot on the all films list. A tad different than you.

5- THOR: DARK WORLD
6- CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER
7- IRON MAN 2
8- THOR
9- IRON MAN 3
10- THE INCREDIBLE HULK

I had recently rewatched Thor: Dark World, and came away simply enjoying the hell outta it. However, Guardians is so new, has some things that did rankle me, but hell I enjoyed it alot! In fact, in this typing, I've moved Dark World and Guardians back around in their spots. :D

The unfortunate thing about both Dark World and Guardians is that the villains and villian mobs are bad guys for bad guys' sake. And that's blah.

I can still put Guardians at #4, but then I remembered that Xmen Days of Future Past and Amazing Spider-man 2.

Days I think will jump in ahead of Fantastic Four at #11, and Amazing Spider-man 2? Pfft....At 19, bumping the Incredible Hulk down.

The unfortunate thing about both Dark World and Guardians is that the villains and villian mobs are bad guys for bad guys' sake. And that's blah.

True, but hopefully that will not be the case too many times.
We are so use to this super large universe that we see a little deeper into the drive and desires of some of these characters, while sadly, at least it seems to me, the general public still needs "just a bad guy" to root for. Plus, a guy yelling "Destroy it. Destroy it all" is a lot easy to deal with considering they will be gone by the time the movie is over. No need for the general public to have a "deeper" character when "crazy, maniac" works just as good for a two hour villain. We get to see their deeper side because we are on a repeat basis with the characters in the comics.
 ;D

And I am waiting a few more days before I change my big list. Want to make sure GOTG is settled in to my brain before I go all willy-nilly
 ;D

I willed my nilled right away. I saw the movie Friday & Saturday. Now was as good a time as any. :)

Yeah, mobs of villains to punch are just stupid. I mean, I believe that 'evil bad looking guys' are todays ninjas/thugs/gangbangers of the 80s films. Stand around the hero in a circle, attack one at a time, have no real drive to win the fight or war. Do as your told. Blah.

At least with Ultron, as long as his motives exist well, then all his robots will feel the same. HA!  :D

Too true. I didn't have Guardians in mine. Of course, in another month we will have to come back and hit this up again, once Avengers 2 hits.
 ;D

And may we should do one with the DC movies included? Well, the Superman and Batman ones, maybe

EDIT - Plus, I think I need to move the original Spidey 2 up a tad. I watched it again a little while back and I did really enjoy it.

01 - Captain America: The Winter Soldier
02 - The Avengers
03 - Guardians of the Galaxy
04 - Iron Man
05 - Captain America: The First Avenger
06 - Thor
07 - Spider-Man 2
08 - Iron Man 2
09 - X-Men Days of Future Past
10 - Thor: Dark World
11 - Spider-Man
12 - X-Men: First Class
13 - X-Men
14 - Iron Man 3
15 - X2
16 - Incredible Hulk
17 - Amazing Spider-Man
18 - Blade
19 - Blade 2
20 - X-Men Origins: Wolverine
21 - Daredevil (Yes, the directors cut)
22 - The Wolverine
23 - Hulk
24 - Spider-Man 3
25 - X-Men: The Last Stand (Really think I need to slide this down a little more)
26 - Fantastic Four
27 - Fantastic Four: Rise of the Surfer
28 - Blade: Trinity
29 - Amazing Spider-Man 2 (This could go last if I was grading disappointments)
30 - Ghost Rider
31 - Elektra
32 - Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance
33 - Man-Thing
34 -The Punisher
35 - Punisher: War Zone

I think that's right by in large

1.   The Avengers
2.   Captain America: The Winter Soldier
3.   Iron Man
4.   Captain America: The First Avenger
5.   Thor: The Dark World
6.   Spider-Man
7.   Guardians of the Galaxy
8.   Captain America: Civil War
9.   Spider-Man 2
10.   Avengers: Age of Ultron
11.   Deadpool
12.   Blade II
13.   X2
14.   Iron Man 2
15.   X-men: Days of Future Past
16.   Dr. Strange
17.   The Amazing Spider-Man
18.   Ant-Man
19.   Fantastic Four
20.   X-Men: First Class
21.   Thor
22.   Blade
23.   Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
24.   X-Men
25.   Iron Man 3
26.   The Incredible Hulk
27.   Daredevil (*The Directors Cut; cuz the theatrical release makes no sense)
28.   The Punisher

35.   X-Men Origins: Wolverine
36.   X-Men: The Last Stand
37.   Elektra
38.   Ghost Rider
39.   Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

Wow...been a while! Didn't have Guardians, Amazing Spider-man 2, Age of Ultron, Ant-man, Days of Future Past, Apocalypse, Civil War, or Dr. Strange!

I reorganzied quite a bit, so I wonder if I'm happy with it right now. Some of it is personal feelings towards a movie, versus the movie itself. I recently rewatched X2 and still highly enjoyed it, and found it still pretty good. I'm almost afraid to rewatch Blade 2, but man, I loved that movie. For a long time. Rewatched it more than a few times. I loved the variant vampire character, I loved the fighting, I loved Blade's persona. So cool.

EDIT 1: DAMMIT!! FORGOT DEADPOOL!!

Okay, so we are doing all Marvel related movies again, this was a little tougher than I hoped for. Not so much at the top, even though deciding on 2-7 was really hard for me, but deciding which of the lower, bottom-feeder movies was better than the one below it, yeah, that was a tough call again. I mean after you get past the top 20 or so ... it is all a collection of mediocrity filled with "If only"s and bits of goodness here and there.  ;) Well, until you get past 35 or so where it is just a cluster of what horrible film is most horrible.
 ;D

I do find that a couple of better ones slid a tad (Iron Man 2 for one example) and that is kinda cool to reflect on
 :)

01 - Captain America: The Winter Soldier
02 - Avengers
03 - Captain America: The First Avenger
04 - Guardians of the Galaxy
05 - Iron Man

Sumnabitch! My edit didn't make it all correct!

It's on the wife's laptop with the saved file of my list WITH Apocalypse on it.

***

For me, I just can't include Man-Thing. There's just no way I'll put that in a consideration. And I've never seen it because I know it only to be awful. Hell, I didn't put Lundren's Punisher up there, or Hasselhoff's Nick Fury, or Ferrigno Hulk TV movies, or Nicholas Hammond Spidey movies...I just made my own line to drawn.

OR-if it's not up there, it's because I don't feel it's worth rating, even with scorn. ;)

And, wow Perry, I know the FF movies don't fit your bill of what they should have been, but to put X3 above them? Harsh man, harsh!  8)

Also, in randomness, Blade was on sci-fi the other day. Was watching it, went 'dammit!' and put in the dvd so I could watch the kick ass movie without any commmercials. Damn, but I love me them first 2!!

The problem I have with Blade, in all honesty, is the damn STAR. I have always hated Wesley Snipes (though not as badly as Liam Neeson or Tommy Lee Jones  ;D) and he just ruins it all for me. The movies themselves are not as bad as my rating, but my enjoyment of them just suffers so much every time his damn face is on the screen that they have to be rated lower, for me.

As for the F.F. I think my love for that team will always force an over harsh opinion on any product. Even the comics get a harsh review most times when compared to what I was reading when I was younger. Not to say that stuff back then was better (it surely was not most of the time ... at least with the writing), but the MEMORY of reading those books is so grand and so beautiful that when the illusion of that perfection is broken, it makes me me irate. It bugs me.

But hey, that is clearly not the worst crime with any of those films, me being sad about something. No the fact that Dr. Doom has yet to be (even close) projected as he should be shown in any of those movies ... that to me is the biggest of offences.

So yes, while I agree with what you are saying as far as how bad X-3 is on the whole, and it is terrible, it is personally just not as poorly done to me as the FF movies. Had I grown up more an X fan, I am sure I would grade X-3 very differently. Well, no, not too differently.
 :)

And I watched about a third of that Man-Thing. Yes, better left in the swamp I say. It may have damaged me.  :D I swear I seen Tommy Lee Jones in the bog scenes.
 ;D ;D

But heck, enough of my mental hangups  ;D... where do you think you would place Apocy on your list?
 :)

Can I assume, Jimmy, that the Josh Trank FF movie is #41? Or does that one qualify for you "not worth the scorn" comment

I'm having a hard time ranking them in numerical order individually at the moment, so I'll just give my two cents worth in terms of groups.

THE BEST:  I think the best ones are the "cinematic universe" entries with my favorite is still probably being the one that started the whole joined universe: Iron Man.  All of the Capt America films are strong and right up there at the top as well.

THE GREAT: I was very surprised at how much I loved the Guardians movies and would rank them highly too, but they're such a different type of movie, it's kinda hard to compare them to the others.  I would probably rank the Avengers movies right under there with Iron Man 2, Thor, and Dr Strange right behind them.

THE OKAY: I liked Incredible Hulk more than most people apparently but would still rank it downstream from the others.  Thor: Dark World wasn't bad, but to me it still just has that straight-to-video quality to it.

THE "SAW IT AND WISH I COULD SOMEHOW GET THOSE 2 1/2 HOURS BACK":  Iron Man 3.  Wow, what a mess.  I'll buy most of these films to keep for my collection even if it's mediocre, but this one ... saw it at the theater, didn't buy it, and never watched it again.  I guess if I had to give it one positive note it would be that it's better than Spider-Man 3, a film that makes Ernest Goes To Jail look like Citizen Kane.

In general, regarding the "other" Marvel movies, liked the Garfield Spider-Man movies better than Toby's two (still trying to wash the knowledge of the third one from my mind, see above).  Never saw Deadpool, not interested.  The Fantastic Four movies were pretty crummy but okay to have on the TV in the background while working on something else.  Never saw the new FF, and from the reviews, probably gonna pass.

I've liked all of the X-Men movies okay, probably would be in the middle of a ranked list of all the Marvel movies.  Watched and collected all of them except for the new one, which I really didn't care much for.  Not horrible, just.. I dunno... I can say I saw it and now I'm done with it.  The Logan movie is in a category all it's own and I'm not sure how to include it on a list, if at all.  More of a gritty sci-fi/horror western that I appreciated in a different way than the rest.
