Title: Horror Movies: Scary vs. Gory
Post by: EmeraldWarrior420 on August 12, 2012, 04:44:03 AM
What do you think about it?

I of course prefer a good scare to a gross-out when they're done right, like any good horror fan. But I some gore, too, if it's done right. Part of being a horror fan is like a good, gory death scene, or really cool looking monster make-up. But there's a line where it's just too much. I don't enjoy movies like Hostel or Saw because it just seems like torture to me, not scary. And I'm not into watching people get tortured. But at the same time, I do enjoy movies like Aliens, Dawn of the Dead, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. The difference is with those that they have a good story behind all that gore, so there's a place for it in their movies.

When I was younger ... about 25 years ago, I would always chose gore over scare. Just liked the blood I suppose. But now, at almost 50 (yes, you read that right), I abhor any movie based solely on the gore element. Movies like HOSTEL and the like do nothing to enhance my movie enjoyment, while movies that showcase the 'fear factor' will always get higher voes from me.

I certainly don't mind the combining of the two elements, but if I am choosing one, give me the slow burn any day.
