I picked up two TPB's collecting Alan Moore's Swamp Thing.  I've never read Moore's Swamp Thing but have always heard high praise for it.  I'm looking forward to diving into it when I get past my regular monthlies.

Just picked up Avengers Assemble #2-4, because even though Thanos wasn't advertised until issues #5 (#6 just came out), these issues directly connect to the Thanos story. Oh, and I already picked-up #1 when it was new.

I'm lucky my LCS had them still. They're the type of shop that barely orders any copies above pre-orders, if any above pre-orders on many titles except the very most popular ones.

Just ordered a bunch of back-issue fillers from ComicCollectorLive.com. This issue in particular stands-out for me:

I also got the Terror Incognita issues of JLA, the Golden Age mini-series from DC Comics, and a bunch of Post-Crisis Superman issues and West Coast Avengers/Avengers West Coast issues.

I beleive that's the first appearance of Superboy Prime long before he goes bad.

Yep, that's the one! It's pretty much the only pivotal Crisis issue I still needed.

Firestorm ... one of the few DC characters I really use to like.

And speaking of Firestorm, funny how our taste in artists change. I remember getting "FURY OF FIRESTORM" when it first came out, not only due to the love of the character, but for that "awesome" Pat Broderick art. I look back at that now and his art just does nothing for me.

Fantastic Earl Norem art. One of the most under-rated and unknown artist in the world ... to the younger audiences at least.
 ;D
Loved his Conan stuff (Curtis mags and Marvel's Savage Sword) and all his earlier stuff.

Finished reading some recent purchases: Marvel 1602 and the Eric Masterson Thor issues. Can't say I was impressed with either.

Marvel 1602 was boring, but at least interesting enough to see how Gaiman could fit Marvel characters into the year 1602 in England. The story itself, though, was a snoozer.

The Eric Masterson Thor issues were very poorly written. Just as cornball and cheesy as it gets with little to no thought put behind anything. I was mentally rolling my eyes every couple of pages.

Yep, sums up my thoughts. Like I said, not what I would call an exciting book. Cool to see the different takes on characters, but ... eh. You are still richer for having read it, however.

Missed most of those. Not a huge Thunderstrike or a DeFalco fan. He did some decent Amazing issues, but ... eh (again  :D) for the most part ... pretty simplistic in approach and execution. A guy that never left the 70s  ;)

Ahhh, one of the fond memories of Shell-Head. Interested to know how that puppy holds up after 25 years. It was great, at the time.

I had gone off Iron Man for a few years and when I seen those two names Michelinie and Layton had been working on IM, I jumped back on. Fun run (especially the Spymaster and Ghost issues) as those creators do work well together.
Best run of IM every was when those two wrote IM with John Romita Jr. on art (His art was fantastic back then, not sure what the hell happened ;D) so if you enjoy this arc, you should certainly check out their first run on the book.

Anywho, let us know if it still reads well or is now dated.
 :)

Edit - You kinda got me excited about the old Iron Man run  :D Went back and did a little research. IF you enjoy this trade ... IF ... you should definitely check out IM runs:
137-140 - (Written by Michelinie/Layton - art by Layton)
and
141-150,152 - (Written by Michelinie/Layton - art by J.R. Jr. ... the good art  ;))

(And of course issues 120-128 which is the famous DEMON IN THE BOTTLE story arc)

Screw it, grab all you can of issues 119-153  :D :D

(If you like this trade and it still holds up. If you don't or it doesn't, then ... I just wasted a lot of time.  :D :D but that is okay, I just got a little memory excited)
 :)

Click for the entire run of what I was just talking about (http://www.instocktrades.com/TP/Marvel/IRON-MAN-BY-MICHELINIE-LAYTON-JRJR-OMNIBUS-HC-VOL-01/SEP120679)  ;D

I may get this next month. Great deal of $1.12 an issue!!!!! All in one great HC. A big HC, but a nice HC  ;D

I ordered this on an impulse buy...

The West Coast Avengers find themselves flung throughout time in this classic tale featuring everything from Marvel's Wild West to ancient Egyptian despots! Witness the "Wackos" as they find themselves face to face with such legends as the Two-Gun Kid, the Phantom Rider, and the Rawhide Kid, along with the time-tossed villainy of Rama-Tut and Immortus. With the Fantastic Four and Dr. Strange along for the ride, what other help could the West Coasters need to set things straight? How about Marvel's modern day Western heroes, the Texas Rangers!

COLLECTING: West Coast Avengers (1985) 17-24, Fantastic Four (1961) 19, Dr. Strange (1974) 53

Free Comic Book Day today! I got a bunch of back-issues, because my LCS was having a 75% off sale, filled in most of the Batman: Knightfall holes:

-Batman #495, 496, 499, 500 - Newstand (already have the special cover), 501 (Knightfall issues)
-Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #63 (Knightsend)
-Batman: Shadow of the Bat #29, 30 (Knightsend)
-Catwoman #12 (Knightsend)
-Detective Comics Starring Batman #659, 661, 663, 664, 665, 668 (All Knightfall/Knightquest issues)
-Robin #8 & 9 (Knightsend issues)
-Superior Spider-Man #5, 6, 7
-Uncanny X-Men #336 (Onslaught Issue)

As for actual free issues, we were limited to 2 copies only, so I got:

-Infinity (Marvel) Free Comic Book Day
-Superman: The Last Son of Krypton
-Bongo Comic Free-For-All 2013 (The Simpsons) - Comic shop guy just gave me this one extra since I'm a regular.

The only one I really missed out on that I wanted to read since I was limited to only 2 was the Star Wars one, and I probably would have enjoyed the DC Nation one.

Title: Re: What Comics Have You Picked Up Recently?

Well for smaller shops or those shops "just hanging on" they have to do that. These FREE COMIC BOOK DAY "free" comics are only "free" to the customers. The shops still have to buy them. I can't blame anyone that is trying to make ends meet for being frugal with their money.

Perhaps over the last couple years of doing this promotion, some shops have seen no benefit in doing it. No increase in foot traffic. No additional sales after the event. They figure "Screw it. I don't want to be the only shop not promoting this event, but I just can't afford to keep buying these comics that have no return for me. I have to cut back". Would you continue to spend money year after year on a promotion (or advertising) that goes nowhere?

6 of the 7 shops around here (within a 20 mile radius), go into this event full bore. Buy huge amounts of every comic. But there is one shop that just can't afford to do this. Even though those FCBD comics are cheap, relatively speaking, they still cost money and he knows, for him, it is just throwing money out of the window, so he is forced to limit the amount he can 'give away'.

Plus, you have jack-asses, that I know, that go from shop to shop, pick up every title just because they are "Free". Asses. I have no problem with people going from shop to shop, hell, I promote that idea (get to see and talk to other fans, see what's going on, mingle .... it's great), but people that just hoard shit because they don't have to pay? Pisses me off.

Like when Marvel had that 700 free comics on Comixology a couple months ago, I had a guy tell me he was happy to get them all. I asked him why did he get the Orson Scott Card books (as I know he shared my thoughts on that utter piece of shit) and his response was "Hey, it was free. I'm not gonna read 'em". I was floored. "So your gluttony overwrote your ideals?" I asked. His response "It was free, what was I gonna do?"
I don't know, idiot, not get shit just because it's free?!?!?!

I know this is not what you guys are doing or even talking about and I apologize for the tangent.  :D

Anyway, as I was saying, there may just be a good reason your shops do this. Of course if your shop owner pulls up in a 2013 Lexus or the like and he is just being a jerk, well ...
 :)

I totally understand why. I wasn't complaining, just explaining why I only got 3 issues.

The comic shop owner actually told me to come back again after 3 p.m. and I could take anything I wanted of what's left. I got there after 3:30, and I wasn't the only guy he told that to. So all that was left by that time was the Bongo-Free-For-All (The Simpsons) and The Smurfs, I passed on the Smurfs. I was busy visiting my brother who just got out of a very painful surgery on his foot.

Oh no, not trying to imply that you (or 'cow) were complaining. I just wanted to further spread the news on reasons why some shops do have to do this.

Got a bunch of original X-Factor issues including the Judgment Day crossover, Muir Island Saga (which crosses into Uncanny X-Men, too), and Mutant Massacre crossovers.

I also got the 2 X-Title crossovers X-Tinction Agenda and X-Cutioner's Song.

And I got a bunch of Batman issues including Batman: Year 3 (Tim Drake's origin), A Lonely Place of Dying, Prodigal (Bruce Wayne's first storyline after returning from Knightfall), and the first appearance of Bane and Jean-Paul Valley as Batman which actually happens a couple issues BEFORE Knightfall. Knightfall really should have began with that issue.

I went to Goodwill today, and came back with some awesome issues for only $1 a piece! Filled in my X-Factor holes (from the original 5 X-Men run), And got the first couple of issues of New Warriors from when Scarlet Spider joined the team. And all of them bagged and boarded to boot!

But best of all, for only a $1, was the first appearance of Apocalypse issue in X-Factor #6:

...do they have a Comics Anonymous group? I think I might have a problem.  :-[

At some point I'm going to fill in the holes of my Uncanny X-Men run.  At that point I may just sell off the rest and just keep that.

I know you're not a current Marvel guy, but this is not too current. Have you ever read SILVER SURFER : REQUIEM by JMS and Ribic?

One of my top 10 books of all time. (Of course, that was 5 years ago, so ...)  ;D

I've read the two Phoenix ones and from what I remember they were fun.  I haven't read that first one but it is something I'm sure I would like.  I lived the What If stories back in the day. The current attempts to revive the series haven't had that same level of fun.  Not sure why but just wasn't the same.

I picked up some more Batman: Knightfall/Knightquest/Knightsend related stuff.

Dang, getting all the Knightfall/Knightquest/Knightsend issues and everything connected to it is a much bigger undertaking than I thought. There's soooo much.

I still need a few random Az-Bat issues, and Batman: Vengeance of Bane I & II.

Good run, but not light reading. Busiek tries, and does a great job, fixing all the time and continuity errors in the AVENGERS, brought forth from having a ton of issues and a ton of different writers ... and a ton of time travel based stories with Immortus/Kang over the years.

Not something you can whip through as it does go deep in Avengers history, but give it the time it deserves and you should enjoy.

Hell, I may have to read it again now.

Started your AVENGERS FOREVER yet?

Yeah, up to about issue #4. I'm saving it for downtime at work when I'm doing nothing but sitting and waiting, since it's a nice long read. (Which happens a couple times a week for an hour or 2 at a time).

I am intrigued, but most of what's going on is still sort of a mystery that's unfolding. So I don't have much to say about it, yet. Well except that Kang seemed to be very heroic and out of character.

Check out what came with my order of comics! How cool is that?!

It's a little rough, but I'm not gonna complain. I paid $1 for it. And it's cool to just go back in time and see where all that kind of stuff was back then. They just don't make magazines this cool anymore.

My answer of jest now seems a bit curt, so let me add that yes, those were some cool mags. I remember buying those along with Star Trek Log, Fangora and a couple more back in the day. There was a time I went to a highschool out of district, so I would stop by the "Southern News" (the newstand near the city bus stop) early in the morning and pick one up from time to time. They were very useful on the ride to high-school in passing the time while also helping me ignore the stranger that smelled oddly of Scotch at 6:15 in the AM

Picked up some stuff on CCL today:

-Amazing Spider-Man #397, 398 & 409 (which finishes my Clone Saga full-run! Awesome!)
-Fury of Firestorm #41 & 42 (COIE tie-ins)
-New Teen Titans (v2) #13 & 14 (COIE tie-ins)
-Superman #414 & 415 (COIE tie-ins)

And a few other filler titles for my collection. But those were the important ones since the Amazing Spider-Man purchases finishes my Clone Saga collection. And the COIE tie-in issues nearly do the same for that set.

And I need just 2 issues (out of 7) from the Infinity Inc. COIE tie-is, 3 more All-Star Squadrons (out of 7), and 3 Wonder Womans (which are all of them for WW, those have proven a little hard to track down out there). I even have the later Legends of the DC Universe Crisis Special that flew under a lot of people's radar and both Crisis Indexes. The original Crisis was one of the greatest super-hero stories ever told as far as I'm concerned, so this makes me happy!

Just sold a couple things on eBay, and used the money for back-issues.

Filled in a lot of my JSA, All-Star Squadron, and JLA holes. I also got some more Crisis on Infinite Earths Tie-In Issues (1st appearance of The Monitor & 1st appearance of Lyla (Harbinger), among them).

Can't wait to read JLA: The Century War, JLA: Golden Perfect, and JLA: The Obsidian Age.

I also got a JSA story I'm looking forward to that fell under my radar somehow the first time around: Kingdom Coming which starts in the last 2 issues of "Magog" and end in the Justice Society of America Special. Supposedly the events leading to Kingdom Come are starting to unfold and the JSA has to stop it from happening.

I actually liked Abyss. I thought it was very well done (considering some of Starlin's, well, decline as he is an aged pro.)

I really dig it.

I just won auctions for the entirety of Rucka's run on Wonder Woman, I have all the HCs I want up to date, and I'm still selling and eyeing up MIllar/Hickman's FF runs in tpb, as well as Fractions good Iron Man tpb work (no Fear itself tie in crap).

Title: Re: What Comics Have You Picked Up Recently?

... as well as Fractions good Iron Man tpb work

Yes, Fear itself tie-ins aside, one of the best Iron Man runs ever!!! He and Salvador just hit it out of the freaking park.

That and ... even though his Thor run sucked ass, for me at least ... his Thor one-shots, which were set up almost like a mini-series, were some of the best Thor I had ever read as well.

Thor - God Size Special, Thor - Ages of Thunder, Thor - Man of War and Thor - Reign of Blood
Iron Man - 1-33, 500-503 (Stopped reading after that)
Immortal Iron Fist - 1-16
Hawkeye - 1-15 (stopped after that)

Those are the four best Fraction runs ever and the only things you need to read of his, in my humble opinion. Casanova and Sex Criminals not included
 ;D

Funny thing is, as much as I loved all of those titles, as much as any fan could, I have absolutely hated most everything else Fraction did at Marvel ... that I have read.

Defenders?
Thor?
Fear Itself?
Avengers vs X-Men?
Fantastic Four?

All of those are just not good at all, as far as I'm concerned.

The Order? I was just not into it, not really "bad, I suppose

Anyway ... sorry for the hijack.
 :D

Oh no Perry, you are right.

I dropped Iron Man at the 500th issue, but I came back at 510 to 527, as that was the finale of his run. As it is, I'd get his Iron Man volumes 1-7, and then 10 and 11.

I can't agree fast enough with how horrible his FF was. 3 issues in, I had regretted buying 2 of them, and was doing collecting it.

His Thor certainly wasn't the best as JMS before or Aaron after, but...I also have no desire to pick it up (I read a buddy's).

I won't lie; a bunch of X-men was honestly quite good. But I don't give a fart in the wind when it comes to picking up X-men work.

But all those other poor/hated Fraction works....fully agreed!

Aquaman Throne of Atlantis - crossover with Justice League

I read this on Comixology and it wasn't bad.  My only gripe was how Orm was treated in the end.  I don't think he was really to blame for his actions and don't understand why Aquaman turned him over to the police.

Anyone else read this?

Coincidentaly, I just finished this reread yesterday as well.

(FYI, JL & Aquaman vol 3s are both 'Throne of Atlantis' and both contain the 6 parts that run through the 2 titles. So, don't buy them both....as I did).

The second time through, I'm not sure I like how it came off. Would a daring man and king give up the prior one to the world, to make sure his kingdom is not held in reproach? Yes.

Would Arthur, though? No...I don't think so.

However, there is certainly a very American thought throughout all the JL that the Atlanteans response is unwarranted and hardly necessary.

However....what we don't know is how many Atlanteans were killed, or how much mass destruction actually occurred.

Justifiying it? No. But is there tons of things that could have been done to make this utterly complex and gray, putting our heroes beliefs and truths to the test? Yup.

But, it's a sad miss.

Just got these for under $10. I've been wanting to read this mini for a VERY long time.

And something to add to my Clone Saga storyline, which I thought was complete until now:

Ah, the Osborn Journal is pretty good!

And Venom...those teeth! That tongue~!

I won't lie; I HATE that the Erik Larsen school of a 4 ft tongue became the norm for drawing Venom's tongue. I just hate it. In triumph or utter joy, Bagley's Venom would have a touch of the tongue as well, but Larsen's Venom always had it lolling about like a 14 year old boxer dog that can't keep his tongue in anymore.

Not a comic, but this was such a cool find I wanted to share it:

I found this really cool video game book at Goodwill today. "Video Games: The Ultimate Guide". It has reviews of a quoted "over 1000 games" with pics

The cover boasts that it includes PS1, N64, Dreamcast, PS2, PC, and Game Boy/GBC games. But it also has a section in the back that covers older systems up to Saturn and all the way back to Atari 2600 and ZX Spectrum! And it even has a "preview" section that looks into the GameCube, XBox, and GBA.

This will do me well as video game collector. Well worth $2!

As I've mentioned before, I recently bought most of the entire Doom 2099 issues and tie-ins for cheap not too long ago, and I've been reading it and really enjoying it.

Well I just started getting through the highly-recommended Warren Ellis issues which begins with issue #26 (in the pic). I'm up to about issue #33 when Alchemex makes their own Captain America to stand against Doom.

And I've got to say, I'm QUITE disappointed. I think Warren Ellis's run on this series is praised for no other reason than it's Warren Ellis. Because his run hasn't been nearly as good as the 25 issues prior.

He's going for this big, epic storyline where Doom takes control of America. The problem is that while he's reaching for this great epic storyline for the 2099 Universe, he's completely lost the character of Doom. Instead of being the fully-fleshed out character that was neither fully hero nor fully villain that I had read for the last 25 issues, Doom becomes a stale archetype of his old villain self (and I mean "stale", because when villain Doom is written right, he's an amazing villain). Ellis also immediately kills off two main-characters in Prophet and Wire when he takes over, which is another big disappointment. And while that cover looks great, the inner-artwork definitely took a dive.

I'm gonna keep reading this until the end, and hope there's a big pay-off. But all those people praising Warren Ellis's run on Doom 2099, have really disappointed me. I wish they would have kept the old creative team around to end this series.
