Title: S.H.I.E.L.D. thread
Post by: G:The Last Man on April 09, 2010, 05:14:44 PM
Where the hell is Nick Fury?  ;D

What we have here, deftly written by Hickman Jonathan, is a history lesson of sorts. Folks like the Brood and Galactus invaded Earth well before the superhero age of the past few centuries.  Brilliant individuals like DaVinci and Galileo were part of an underground SHIELD organization before Nick Fury turned it into an acronym. ;D

While I liked what I saw in this first issue both in story direction and art, I am only marginally interested in purchasing this book in a monthly format.  To me, it is more of an exercise in how can we fit these great historical figures into the Marvel Universe.  I think this is going to be better suited to reading in trade or collected in one volume.  Lately Nick Fury gets me excited to read....DaVinci and a shadowy secret SHIELD with coneheads.....not so much.

What say everyone else?

I was holding off on this one until it came out at Marvel Digital.  Sounds like thats a good plan.  I definately want to read it because I like Hickman's work but sounds like I can wait a little while.

Yeah, I read that it is definitely a finite, maxi-series.  I'd say wait.

I now fully expect that Perry is going to demand that he revoke our status as card-carrying comic fans!   :P

Finally had a chance to read this last night.

I am a little disappointed in the "Marvel 616 history" aspect, but if I take this as an alternate universe history of SHIELD, then I am very much happy. Still a lot different than I was expecting, but I should have known it would be more of a 'deeper', sci-fi feel to with Hickman having full reign. Much like his PAX ROMANA. Blending futuristic aspects into history.

Sadly, I can't condemn anyone for not picking this up, damn it  :D, as it wasn't what I was expecting, but I still enjoyed it. Should also end in about 11 more issues.

Issue #2

Okay, I'm lost. Not ashamed to say it. In fact, I will say it again ... I'm lost.

I am not sure when Morrison took Hickmans good name and started writing this title, but HOLY SHIT ... WTF is going on? I am a huge Hickman fan. Love his stuff. Love how he blends hard core Sci-Fi writing with a twist. Love it. But could he be out Hickman'ing himself here? Could he really be taking me by Morrison'osys here?

Start letting me in on your F'n secret there Jonathan... give me some idea of what this story is you are freaking trying to write. Ya can't just go all out with "the strange" without giving us some character moments to grasp the urgency of this important thing I think you are trying to tell us ... I believe.

I am staying on this title, for pure stubbornness ... nothing more, but jeez am I feeling stupid for doing so.
Help me Hickman ... you are my only hope.

Well I got sucked in by the cool cover of issue 3 and went ahead and ordered the first 3 issues.  Should be here next weekend.

Will I regret it?

I stopped getting this title due to sheer confusion.

Really frustrated me as I sat and reread them all at one time and it was a lot better ...  >:(

I've got the first four issues in the stack now.  Might take awhile to get to them but I'll let you know what I think when I do.

Just finished issue 5 and I REALLY like this series.  It is still a little confusing reading in single issue format but I like the journey and concepts.  Loved the interaction between the fathers of Tony Stark and Reed Richards.  Looks like they have an important role to play.

I think the confusion for me comes more with not remembering where I left off from the previous issue.  I'll definitely sit down and re-read this series once I have all of the issues.
