Urban Monsters is the story of a road trip of four buddies. Except in this case the buddies are a fish man, a zombie, a satyr, and a beast-man. In the future monsters have come out of hiding and have integrated for better or worse in to society.
This book goes a long way to setting up the main characters and their motivations for starting out on their roadtrip. The writer is well paced and it has a certain humor to it. The concept at first intrigued me, but upon reading it I was hooked for ride. You can get the feeling of the characters from the writing and it builds a certain amount of empathy.
The art is clean and crisp, and not over the top. It works well with the writing and even has a few easter eggs hidden in it. The character designs are well done, and distiguishable. The coloring of the book works really well and has a light feeling even in the darker sections of the book.
All in all it was a fun book to read, and I'll be picking up the second issue. The first issue ends on a good cliff hanger that'll have you wanting to pick up issue #2 just to see the predicament the main characters get in next issue.
